Brief Profile
I am a consultant cardiologist/ electrophysiologist at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital
(LHCH) since 2007. LHCH provides a regional electrophysiology (EP) service to a
population of 2.8 million, and is one of the largest cardiac centres in the United Kingdom. I
am a very high volume operator in interventional EP, and have performed over 200 ablation
cases annually since 2009. I am the trust lead for Left Atrial Appendage Occluder (LAAO)
Service, and our hospital was one of 10 sites selected nationally for this service by the NHS
England as part of the Commissioning through Evaluation (CtE) program. I proctor
cardiologists nationally and internationally for LAAO implants, and I have been awarded
NHS Clinical Excellence Awards in 2010, 2014 and 2015.
I have held the position of Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London since 2011,
and head the arrhythmia working group of the Institute of Cardiovascular Medicine and
Science, a research collaboration between Royal Brompton Hospital and LHCH. I am the
primary supervisor for three MD (res) students at Imperial, and also assess the progress of
other Students at Imperial College working towards higher research degrees. I have examined
PhD candidates for Queen Mary University, and City University, London. I am the Chief
Investigator for four ablation trials (PRESSURE, SMANPAF, PRAISE, and VISTAX), and
Dhiraj Gupta

have been successful in obtaining over £1.5 million in competitive research grants. In the past
3 years, I have authored over 15 scientific publications as senior author.
I have earned repute for my expertise in treating patients suffering from Atrial Fibrillation
(AF), and I work closely with the British Heart Foundation to provide education and training
to their staff nationally. I am also member of the Medical Advisory Committee of the national
charity, AF Association. I have been elected to the Council of British Heart Rhythm Society
in Oct 2015 for a term of three years, and as a council member I help shape national
guidelines and policies related to arrhythmia care.
In addition to my roles as an interventional EP cardiologist and researcher, I have forged
strong links with primary care. In 2012 I designed and developed the Primary Care Atrial
Fibrillation (PCAF) service to improve stroke prevention, and this service has won several
national awards for innovation and impact. For my work in reducing AF-related stroke burden
in the community, I was awarded in 2014 the Arrhythmia Alliance Excellence in Practice
Award for ‘Outstanding Individual who has contributed to Arrhythmia Services in the United
Kingdom’.
