BTEC NATIONAL SPORT Edexcel BTEC Level 3 DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNIT 1: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport ASSIGNMENT: ONE TEACHER: ASSIGNMENT: ONE TITLE: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1 INDICATIVE CONTENT: P1, P2 DATE SET: DUE DATE: LEARNING OUTCOME 1. Know the structure and function of the skeletal system CONTENT 1. Know the structure and function of the skeletal system Structure of skeletal system: axial skeleton; appendicular skeleton; types of bone (long bones, short bones, flat bones, irregular bones, sesamoid bones); location of major bones (cranium, clavicle, ribs, sternum, humerus, radius, ulna, scapula, ilium, pubis, ischium, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, vertebral column – cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx) Function of skeletal system: support; protection; attachment for skeletal muscle; source of blood cell production; store of minerals Joints: fixed; slightly moveable; synovial/freely moveable (types, structures, movement at each joint) ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE P1 – Describe the structure and function of the skeletal system PASS P2 – Describe the different classifications of joints MERIT DISTINCTION N/A N/A SCENARIO As a sports college you feel that it is important for all student athletes to have an understanding of how their bodys’ work so they know how to look after it and how to improve in their chosen sport. As an athlete yourself you would also like to know more about the human body and all the systems that work together that allow us to take part in a wide variety of sport and exercise activities. You have been asked by the Head of the PE department to produce a report to describe and explain how each of the body’s systems work. The first system you will look at is the skeletal system which contains all of the bones and joints within the human body and also serves a number of different functions. Produce a handout for students at your school titled ‘The Skeletal System’. It must contain the following: Describe the structure and function of the skeletal system Describe the axial and appendicular skeleton Describe the different types of bone in the skeleton (long bones, short bones, flat bones, irregular bones, sesamoid bones) Show a picture with all the main bones in the skeleton- (cranium, clavicle, ribs, sternum, humerus, radius, ulna, scapula, ilium, pubis, ischium, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, vertebral column – cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx) Describe the five functions of the skeleton (support; protection; attachment for skeletal muscle; source of blood cell production; store of minerals) (P1) Describe the different classifications of joints Describe all three classifications and the amount of movement each joint allows (fixed, slightly moveable and synovial/freely moveable) Describe each of the different synovial joints and the different movement that each allows. Pictures may be used to help your description. (E.g. ball and socket, hinger joint etc) (P2) Grading criteria: P1, P2
