Review: GEOGRAPHY
Ancient Greece developed
individual city-states due to the
islands and mountainous
regions.
Greece was divided into many
City-States.
The two that we will focus on:
1. Athens
2. Sparta
Years: 700 BC to 400 BC.
Athens
In Athens, the male citizens
had power and can vote on
any issue. This was the first
element of direct
democracy.
DRACO
Early in its history Athens was ruled
by kings, which were later replaced
by an Aristocracy.
However, most Athenians were
very poor and this created conflict.
In order to prevent conflict,
Draco replaced oral law with
strict written laws. VERY
HARSH!!!
Athenian Democracy
The Athenians influenced the United States because
Athenians supported increased learning and citizen
participation in government.

LEGACY
The most important legacy of Ancient
Greece is its impact on Law and
Government.
The two most important Greek city-states
were Athens and Sparta.
One was a Direct Democracy (Athens),
while the other was an Oligarchy(Sparta).
Democracy
Athens was the world’s first DEMOCRACY
Athens was a Direct Democracy in which male
citizens had power and could vote on any
issue.
vs.
Athens’ government was extremely different
than the U.S. in one way:
Athens had a Direct Democracy which
meant voters voted on ALL issues.
The United States has a Representative
Democracy, which means we elect
people(ex. senators) to run the
government and pass laws.
The Spartan Way
Spartan life was completely based on military
power. Children were raised solely to become
good soldiers.
Women had more rights in Sparta than in
Athens. They were encouraged to play sports
and maintain good physical fitness.
Sparta was an oligarchy, where a small group
had ruling power.
