Directional Terms Activity:
Objective:
This lesson is designed to teach and reinforce the “language of anatomy”. In groups, label each other by anatomical
direction. Then, students label drawings of themselves with anatomical directions.
Keywords:
superior, inferior, anterior, posterior, medial, lateral, intermediate, proximal, distal, superficial, and deep.
Body Activity:
1. Each group of students needs a stack of note cards and tape. On the cards write the keywords. Students
should also put an arrow or arrows pointing in the direction the term describes on their cards.
2. Using tape, students then take turns placing the cards in the correct location on their partner’s body.
3. As they place each card on their partner’s body, they should make a correct sentence using the term.
4. Take turns so all group members have a chance to learn the keywords.
Examples: The head is SUPERIOR to the neck.
5. Draw yourself on notebook paper and label with words and arrows the keywords. Keep this to help you
study.
Throw away used cards and used tape.
