SOCIAL STUDIES PHILOSOPHY
The social sciences include the study of historical events, government functions, geographical concepts, natural resources, business cycles, group behavior, and
the individual to better understand the past, present, and the future of society.
There are many reasons for studying social sciences in the schools. It helps us to relate our present societal conditions to definite events in the past. It gives us
an understanding of the human conditions and how we develop. By studying the social sciences, we can develop the process of critical thinking. Another
significant goal of the social sciences is to teach the function of our government and the individual’s relationships and responsibilities to that government. In
order to have an effective, well running democracy, individual citizens must be aware of their rights and responsibilities.
We are committed to social science courses that deal with these issues. These inquiries must involve such fundamental questions as: Who makes decisions
about whom and what? How are decisions made? How are goods and services distributed? By whom? Toward what end? What do we believe about the life
of the community and justice? These are questions to which we direct our study of the social sciences.
