Sociology Syllabus
Course Description:
From the American Sociological Association:
“Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the social causes and
consequences of human behavior. Sociologists investigate the structure of groups,
organizations, and societies, and how people interact within these contexts. Since
human behavior is shaped by social factors, the subject matter of sociology ranges
from the intimate family to the hostile mob; from organized crime to religious
cults; from the divisions of race, gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a
common culture; and from the sociology of work to the sociology of sports. In fact,
few fields have such broad scope and relevance for research, theory, and
application of knowledge.
Sociology provides many distinctive perspectives on the world, generating new
ideas and critiquing the old. The field also offers a range of research techniques
that can be applied to virtually any aspect of social life: street crime and
delinquency, corporate downsizing, how people express emotions, welfare or
education reform, how families differ and flourish, or problems of peace and war.
Because sociology addresses the most challenging issues of our time, it is a rapidly
expanding field whose potential is increasingly tapped by those who craft policies
and create programs. Sociologists understand social inequality, patterns of
behavior, forces for social change and resistance, and how social systems work.”
Course Objectives:
 Define Sociology.
 Define culture and explain some of the universal functions of culture.
 Define and provide examples of the major components of social structure:
status, role, social institution, and group.
 Evaluate the influences of heredity and environment on the development of
personality.
 Explain the key points of nature-nurture debate.
 Define social control and distinguish between deviance and crime.
 Define social institutions and identify the primary institutions in a society.
 Describe the study of demography and define basic demographic concepts

 1 composition notebook (optional for daily writing)

Your Sociology Notebook:
A key part of your participation/classwork grade is your notebook. Your notebook
will be spot checked periodically throughout the semester. What goes in your

40% Major: Tests and Projects
30% Daily Classwork & Quizzes

Classroom Rules:
 Be Prompt – always be on time, when the door shuts you must go get a pass
 Be Prepared – have your book, notebook, and writing utensils each day
 Be patient – Remember there is only one teacher and many of you who each
have different learning styles
 Be polite – show respect for me, your fellow students, and all others who
enter the classroom
Consequences:
 1st offense: verbal warning
 2nd offense: Possible consequence including a second verbal warning, teacher
assigned detention, and / or parental notification
 3rd offense: referral to the office to be handled at the administrator’s
discretion
*Teachers and administrators reserve the right to use consequence not listed
in the order above that better fit the behavior. Repeated offenses lead to
referral to the principal or assistant principal.
Passes out of Class:
Please do not ask for a pass unless you have a true emergency. No passes will be
given to go to lockers or another teacher. You will have 3 passes for each 9 weeks
with incentives if you do not use them. These passes can be used for things such as
restroom, water, or locker without penalty. If you use them all before the 9 weeks
is up you must stay 5 minutes after school every time you use the restroom.
* I students with special circumstances will be handled on an individual basis
per doctor/ parent notification
Make-Up Work: If you miss a day, you will need to pick up your make-up work from
the “make-up work tray” before class starts. All homework from the day you are
absent will be due the next day. It is not the teacher’s responsibility to remind
you, this is your responsibility. Any work you miss will receive the grade of zero
until it is made up or turned in. This must take place in a timely manner.
** Students are responsible for making up assignments and only partial credit
will be given beyond due dates. It is the student’s responsibility to contact
the teacher on the first chance to get make up work.
Extra Help:
I am available each morning by 7:15 for extra help. Please get a pass prior to coming
to ensure that you can come down the hall way.
Rebel Success Center offers Social Studies help on Mondays from 3:30-5
Athletic Study Hall is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please see Mrs. Mabry
or your coach for details.
