Salary: Band 4 Job Reference: SG8265 Closing Date: Wednesday 11th June 2014 The post-holder will be expected to work in all three areas (Maxillofacial Surgery, Restorative Dentistry and Orthodontics).There are major developments planned in these areas in the coming year and the job will be reviewed when appropriate to meet the changing needs of the service. 1. JOB PURPOSE The Dental Nurse will be expected to work in all areas. He/she will become part of our multidisciplinary team, working together to provide a high standard of care and support to all patients during their visits to our departments. The Dental Nurse will act at all times in accordance to the professional guidelines set by the British Association for Dental Nurses, adhering to NHS Grampian and local policies and procedures, with statutory registration with the General Dental Council imminent. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1.1 Ensure that all relevant papers, including Xrays are in the patient's notes and that, appliances, study models, instruments and equipment are prepared for each session. 1.2 Undertake safely and effectively the decontamination, disinfection and sterilization of instruments and equipment to prevent cross infection or accidents. 1.3 Carry out day to day maintenance of dental equipment and instruments to ensure that they are kept in good working order and regularly check expiry dates of materials to ensure effective use of products. 1.4 Ensure that adequate supplies of consumable equipment and materials are regularly stocked to facilitate treatment. 1.5 Receive and prepare patients for treatment ensuring a high standard of patient care is delivered. 1.6 Maintain patient confidentiality. 1.7 Have a sound knowledge of all materials used during treatment sessions. 1.8 Keep all documentation accurately and up to date. 1.8 As knowledge and skills develop, the postholder will be expected to participate in the “extra duties” rotation i.e. ordering of stores, appointment making 1.9 Participate in the induction of new staff to the department and after a period of time assist with ongoing supervision and appraisal . 1.10 Maintain and improve professional knowledge and competence. 1.11 Perform day to day duties in a caring professional manner. 1.12 During Local Anaesthetic treatment perform the duties of both the chairside assistant and the “floor nurse”. 1.13 Attend theatres as required to assist KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED Hold either the National certificate or equivalent qualification. Extensive experience as a dental nurse. Knowledge and understanding of the varying procedures, treatments, materials equipment and instruments used. Communicate effectively with patients, carers and the multi- disciplinary team. Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to support both the patient and the medical/dental staff during treatments/procedures. For example, during the construction of a dental obturator, application of fixed Orthodontic appliances. Participate in the induction and training of new staff, and assist with their ongoing support. Good basic understanding of a variety of medical conditions and their implications in the overall care of the patient. Knowledge for the need, and the ability to perform effective infection control policies. Orthodontist/Restorative Consultant when impressions are required of a patient undergoing a general anaesthetic e.g. cleft palate babies. 1.14 Demonstrate as required oral hygiene techniques and care of orthodontic appliances to the patient and /or relative to assist them maintain high standards of oral hygiene to prevent complications during treatment. 1.15 Provide cross-cover for the dental nurses in the three departments to facilitate the smooth running of the services on a day to day basis. 1.16 Participate in the Combined Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic which is held in the main Children’s Hospital. 1.17 The above list is intended as a guide to the general role of the dental nurse. DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of care to all patients on their allocated clinic or treatment list. This will be delegated by the person responsible for making up the weekly rota but ultimately the nurse in charge has overall responsibility. The post holder will be required to use their own initiative and be able to make decisions,e.g. if a patients arrives late, can they still be seen or will they be re-appointed. However they must recognise their own limitations and actively seek out guidance and supervision when required. 8. Communicate with Senior Dental Nurse or Sister regarding certain nursing team and practice issues. The post holder has to use the skills of reassurance, empathy, encouragement, motivation, clarity, support and listening on a daily basis, while working with patients who have a wide range of conditions including dental phobia and general anxieties, teenagers undergoing brace treatment through to patients who present with extra difficulties because of treatment received for Head and Neck Cancer or parents of cleft babies. At times the post holder has to use their communication skills to defuse situations involving concerned, angry and frustrated patients, relatives and staff. 9. PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB Part of the job entails physical work and the post holder would require moving and handling skills, which should be kept up to date yearly or more frequently if required. The post holder is required to work within confined spaces, and will be required to assist immobile patients. On a daily basis the post holder will have to sit and stand in awkward positions for prolonged lengths of time. There is a need for accuracy in the use of all clinical and other equipment, particularly regarding the mixing of materials and aspiration. Good general dexterity for manipulating very small pieces of equipment and implements. The post holder will be required to be able to initiate appropriate emergency care. 10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB Working in the hospital environment compared to community or general dental practice, and at the same time learning more complex treatment procedures. To be able to assist the operator and have complete knowledge of the various stages and components of Dental Implantology. This is from the surgical insertion of the fixture right through to the completion and fitting of the final bridge, denture or crown, with routine maintenance. To assist the operator and support patients, whilst a facial prosthesis or dental obturator is constructed for patients who have had surgery for Head and Neck cancer. Working with teenagers, helping to keep them motivated during Orthodontic treatment. 12. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB Fully qualified dental nurse with extensive experience. LOCATION/HOSPITALS WARD/DEPARTMENT ABERDEEN ROYAL INFIRMARY MAXILLOFACIAL UNIT/RESTORATIVE ATTRIBUTES ESSENTIAL DENTISTRY/ORTHODONTICS DESIRABLE Qualifications National certificate or equivalent. Member of GDC or in process of joining. Experience Comprehensive experience in all aspects of general dental practice. Previous experience of working with patients with facial deformities, patients undergoing Orthodontic treatment, minor oral surgery procedures. Special Aptitude Abilities Flexible/adaptable team worker. Good communication skills. Ability to prioritise workload and use initiative. Experience of working on a rotation with different dentists.
