8. Describe the function of the sphincter muscles.
Muscular rings that keep food traveling one way at the correct pace through the digestive tract.
9. Explain the function of mucus.
Thick sticky substance that lines and protects the digestive tract, lubricates and protects the wall of the digestive tract.
10. Define and give examples of diffusion and indicate why it is also called passive transport. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration without added energy. Sugar and water diffused thru the dialysis tubing, called passive transport because no energy required.
11. Explain the difference between active and passive transport and indicate the importance of both processes in absorption.
Active transport requires energy from the cell to move molecules from low to high concentration .Passive transport moves molecules without adding energy from high to low concentration
12. Indicate why the small intestine needs an extensive internal surface area.
Absorption of nutrients occurs at the small intestine so there is a need for large surface area.
13. Explain the functions of the large intestine and indicate what conditions may arise when undigested waste passes too quickly or too slowly through the large intestine.
In the large intestine the water and minerals are absorbed. If the waste passes too quickly you have diarrhea, too slowly constipation. Drink more water to relieve.
14. List in order the organs of the digestive tract, beginning with the mouth.
