Tumor Biology Course code: BIMM51 Spring 2015 Syllabus Useful general information Specific aims List of teachers BIMM51 TUMOR BIOLOGY, 15 ECTS Aims: The course is focused to give detailed knowledge in the molecular mechanisms behind the transformation of a normal cell into a tumor cell. The aim is to create a better understanding of this process, starting with the earliest damage to the cell and continuing to the diagnosis and prognostication. The course also covers present and future methods of treatment. Course content: Genes that cause cancer and their normal function in the cell, aetiology, cancer epidemiology, growth factors, signal transduction, transcription factors, cell cycle control and apoptosis, the interaction between the tumor cells and normal cells, angiogenesis, tumor progression and metastasis, tumor virology, tumor immunology, radiation treatment, chemotherapy, heredity and cancer as well as ethical aspects of hereditary cancer. More specified lectures covers clinical aspects of breast cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, glioma, melanoma, lung cancer, hematopoietic malignancies as well as pediatric oncology. Course teaching: The course is based on Problem Based Learning (PBL). PBL is focused on individual studies and tutored problem-‐solving group discussions, where scientific articles and text books constitute a basis for information retrieval. Central themes in tumor biology will be covered in comprehensive lectures. The course also includes a one-‐week fulltime practical laboration that serves to illustrate some central methods used in modern experimental tumor biology and a one-‐week fulltime bioinfomatic exercise. In addition, the course includes a journal club in which each student is assigned to a scientific article which will be presented during group seminars. Admission requirements: Molecular medicine (BIMA50) or at least 120 hp (ECTS) Science studies including 15 hp (ECTS) basic chemistry (KEMA00, KEMA01, KEMA02 or KEMA03), 15 hp (ECTS) Cellens kemi (MOBA02), and 15 hp (ECTS) physiology (BIMA34 or BIOC01). You will have access to the BMC student centre (open 07.45-‐17.00). Lunchrooms are available at BMC student centre. The practical lab will be held at Medicon Village, building 404. The bioinformatics lab will take place at HSC, Baravägen Compulsory course items: PBL sessions, practical laboration, bioinformatics study, journal club. Examination: To obtain a Pass grade on the course you must have completed all compulsory course items and obtain a Pass in practical lab and bioinformatics exercise. The practical lab and bioinformatics week both include a detailed, written lab-‐report. Two grades, Pass or Fail, will be awarded as a result of the written examination. 1hp Journal Club presentation, 6hp practical/bioinformatics lab, 8hp written exam. Course related information: LibGuides is an Internet site containing course related information and you access the BIMM51 guide through http://libguides.lub.lu.se/BIMM51/tumorbiology. (Password: TB2015). Here you have access to everything related to the course, some relevant articles, libraries and information resources. We recommend you to visit the home page regularly. If there are late changes in the schedule this will be announced at this page. Course literature and textbooks: We recommend the new Second Edition of ”The Biology of Cancer” by R.W. Weinberg, Garland Science, 2013. A collection of relevant review articles will also be available as links at the homepage. In order to recapitulate basic cell and molecular biology, we strongly recommend you to have an updated textbook in cell biology available. We recommend the 5th edition of “Molecular Biology of the Cell”, Garland Science 2007. If you do not have the 5th edition, the 4th edition is available in Pubmed Books. Relevant chapters in the 5th edition are chapters 5, 15, 17, 18, 19 and 20. Relevant chapters in the 4th edition are chapters 5, 15, 17, 19, and 23.
