The Milky Way Galaxy
Our Sun is one star
amongst billions of other
stars in the galaxy.
Decorate the galaxy with colours and glitter.
Milky Way Facts
• The Milky Way galaxy is home to 400 billion stars and our own Sun and Solar System.
• It is a barred spiral galaxy.
• Scientists think the centre of the galaxy contains a super massive black hole.
• The Milky Way is full of dust, gas and stars.
• The Milky Way, along with everything else, is moving through space.
Galaxies
Spiral Galaxy
Irregular Galaxy
Can you match the description to the type of galaxy?
These galaxies can look like anything and have many different
characteristics they do not have a distinct regular shape. They are
often chaotic in appearance, with no bulge or spiral arm structure.
Stars in this type of galaxy are often very close together making
the centre look like one giant star. These galaxies are like a flat
and squashed circle in shape, they often have a smooth, nearly
featureless bright appearance.
Elliptical Galaxy

The winding arms in this galaxy are like wheel spokes. These spokes
cause new stars to form. The arms become curved as the galaxy
rotates and wind around the galaxy tightly. We live in a galaxy like

this.
