Why is it Important:
This award was the impetus for launching the Breast Cancer Startup Challenge – the first of the
startup challenges initiated by the Center for Advancing Innovation.
Text:
The Center for Advancing Innovation received a $150,000 research grant to help evaluate the
progress of 64 Avon Foundation-funded projects working to develop a new blood test for
breast cancer, including tests targeting who in the general population is at risk of breast cancer,
what pre-cancers like DCIS will become invasive cancer, and what cancers will spread and
metastasize to other parts of the body.
Breast Cancer Start-Up Challenge: The Avon Foundation, The Center for Advancing Innovation,
and the National Cancer Institute partnered to create a business start-up challenge to fast-track
ten promising breast cancer research discoveries. The inventions were conceived and
developed by Avon Foundation grantees and scientists at the National Cancer Institute.
