An abstract briefly outlines the nature and scope of the Dissertation, its aims, the sources used and the methodologies employed. A summary of the main results is presented. This case study aims to examine employee engagement can improve business performance of SCBZ in view of the Bank’s subdued performance (market share of deposits and total assets) over the past three years (2010-2013) despite the injection of new capital and the change of the business model. Guided by extensive literature review on concepts of employee engagement and business performance this study takes the deductive approach, making use of a survey strategy by way of questionnaires and interviews as well as secondary data as forms of collecting data. Analysis of the research findings reflects existence of various leadership elements and cultures as well as evidence of positive correlations between certain leadership and cultural elements to business performance. In view of the insights of the research findings and literature, the author recommends a comprehensive employee engagement program aimed at up skilling current and future leaders of SCBZ particularly in Transformational Leadership skills which appears to be more effective and appropriate for the organization. The author also recommends enhancement of organizational culture to drive culture of creativity and competitiveness. To assist embed the proposed organizational culture and leadership capabilities, the author recommends mechanisms that will ensure that these elements are well embedded within the organization towards superior business performance and survival of the organization. This research focused on SCBZ thus restricts other insights that may exist in the area of study. The author recommends an extensive research that seeks to provide more insight into the impact of employee engagement on business performance in the wider context of the Zimbabwe Banking industry. The outcome of the extensive research will provide more insight into other elements of employee engagement that SCBZ can adopt towards superior business performance as well as achievement of its vision and mission. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The author would not have successfully completed this dissertation without the support of a number of parties and stakeholders.
