The Northwest and California World History Association Affiliates Inaugural Teacher Workshop Day October 12th, Portland State University Please join us for an informative and fun day of presentations by experienced scholars of world history: We are pleased to announce the CA and NW WHA Affiliates Inaugural Teacher Workshop Day on October 12th at Portland State University. We offer several benefits to K-12 educators in Washington, Oregon, and California: ✔ A full-day program of presentations by leaders in the field of world history ✔Oregon continuing education hours included ✔Optional Washington State clock hours and Portland State University credits* Bringing the Environment into your Classroom: Strategies for Teaching and Assessing the Environmental Theme in the New AP World History Curriculum Not all textbooks do an equally good job presenting information about world environmental history. This hands-on workshop offers a threepronged approach for helping your students better understand the role of environmental process in history: · Learn strategies for incorporating human-environmental relationships into your existing APWH course · Engage in sample environmentally-focused lessons · Evaluate sample student assessment Presenters: Laura J. Mitchell, Associate Professor of History, UC Irvine Co-chair, APWH Test Development Committee Deborah Wing-Leonard, APWH instructor, Clear Lake High School, Houston, TX Teaching Middle and High School World History through a Global and Environmental Perspective with World History for Us All This hands-on workshop will introduce middle and high school teachers to the open-sourced World History for Us All online world history curriculum. Presenters from Long Beach Unified School District in California will share their experiences and practices in using this curriculum to teach world history from a global and environmental perspective in middle and high school classrooms. Focusing instruction on themes can help students consolidate learning by bridging the familiar and the new, the past and the present. This workshop will present new strategies for teaching world history thematically in a variety of classroom settings.
