UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM RECRUITMENT ROLE PROFILE FORM Job Title: Research Assistant / Associate / Fellow in Aerostructures School/Department: Faculty of Engineering - Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (IfAM) Salary: £25513 to £37394 per annum, depending on skills and experience (minimum £28,695 with relevant PhD). Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance Job Family and Level: Research and Teaching Level 4a/4CTG/4 Contract Status: This post will be offered on fixed term contract for a period of 2 years. Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week, Full time. Location: University Park Campus Reporting to: Prof. A.A. Popov The Purpose of the New Role: To carry out structural analysis and design of structures and components for the prototype of a new rotorcraft and to support the University of Nottingham’s research and development programmes in the area of aerostructures. Specifically, the role will involve stress, vibration and dynamics calculations by simplified models for structural analysis and by developing and validating advanced computer models and simulations for aerospace structures made of metallic and composite materials. It will be part of the engineer’s responsibility to interact with both research and industrial partners and to prepare reports and necessary documentation for material and component qualification and aircraft certification. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Develop models and simulations of structural behaviour, perform detailed structural analyses under static and dynamic loading and against set design requirements, and prepare plans for testing of components and structures. Interact with the Research Partners and Industrial Partners to establish design requirements, load cases, specifications and criteria for evaluation and modification of design solutions. Participate and contribute to multidisciplinary design optimisation and concurrent engineering tasks with relevance to the design and manufacture of aerostructures. Report to key stakeholders, and liaise with relevant IfAM personnel for technical reviews, project planning and reporting (as required) and communicate issues and outcomes of the project to the assigned project manager. Prepare reports and documentation for qualification and certification of aircraft components and structures. Support the exploitation of results through the identification of new IP and/or publications. Participate and present at relevant meetings. Any other duties appropriate to the grade and role of the post holder. Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience Essential Qualifications/ MEng (or equivalent) in an Education appropriate field Skills/Training Excellent written and verbal communication skills Understanding of engineering structures, loads and stress calculations Broad understanding of Desirable Doctoral degree in aerospace engineering Knowledge of one, or following: o Composite materials o Dynamics o Structural vibration o Aeroelasticity more, of the Experience Personal Attributes Other technologies and science for manufacturing processes and materials testing Sound knowledge and experience of: o Structural analysis o Engineering design Computational methods as applied to aerospace structures Finite Element Analysis in the environment of ABAQUS, ANSYS or NASTRAN Experience of working with UK and EU industries Team player Ability to work unsupervised to tight deadlines Able to travel to companies throughout the UK and EU as required o Design methods o Aircraft certification procedures Project/Work Package Management Skills Direct experience of working with UK and/or EU aerospace industries Relevant experience in any of the following areas: o Manufacturing Systems and Assembly Processes o Materials Testing o Design of Experiments o CAD Simulation and Modelling (CATIA V5 and/or DELMIA) Proactive outlook Decision Making: i) Taken independently by the role holder; Direction of research and structural design on a day-to-day basis Structural design and analysis to achieve the stated aims of projects ii) Taken in collaboration with others; Direction of project and collaborations Focus of papers/reports to be submitted to peer review and to industrial partners Abstracts/conferences to attend iii) Referred to the appropriate line manager by the role holder; • Long-term direction of research and wider research strategy with collaborating partners • Any decisions relating to a necessary and unavoidable change in project specifications and outputs Due to the nature of this post all candidates will be required to gain the appropriate level of security clearance associated with major aerospace companies prior to interview.
