Number & Title of Course: APRL 742 Advanced Structures, 3 credits. Course Description This course explores the applications of concepts from Structures I and II in the design of structural elements in steel and reinforced concrete in accordance with code provisions. Course Goals & Objectives: The goal is to provide students with the necessary skills to design simple structural system components in steel and concrete for gravity and lateral loads in accordance with current code provisions. Students who successfully complete this course will be able to demonstrate competency in the following areas: Ability to use LRFD method in the design of steel structures in accordance with current code provisions Ability to use the tables provided in the AISC Steel Construction manual Ability to design reinforced concrete slabs, beams and columns in accordance with current code provisions Ability to design lateral bracing systems Student Performance Criteria addressed: B.9. Structural Systems: Understanding the basic principles of structural behavior in withstanding gravity and lateral forces and the evolution, range, and appropriate application of contemporary structural systems Topical Outline: Design in Steel: 44% Design in Concrete: 44% Lateral Bracing Methods: 12% Prerequisites: APRL 442/542 Structures II Textbooks/Learning Resources: Required Texts: Reinforced Concrete Design, Limbrunner and Aghayere, ISBN: 978-0-13-504435-3 Steel Construction Manual: AISC 13th edition, ISBN: 1-56424-055-X Recommended Texts: Building Code requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-05/318R-05) ISBN: 0-87031-171-9 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE/SEI 7-05) ISBN: 0-7844-0809-2 International Building Code 2009, ISBN: 978-1-58001-725-1 Offered: Spring, Summer annually Faculty Assigned: Hollee Hitchcock Becker (F/T)
