Job Description – April 2016
BACKGROUND
The Community Foundation exists to improve the quality of the community life in Cumbria by
making grants to voluntary organisations and individuals and managing grant making funds on
behalf of individuals, companies and government organisations.
Established in September 1999 the Foundation has given out almost £30 million in grants to more
than 4,000 groups and 4,000 individuals. We have also built our long term funds to over £14
million.
The Foundation has a strong donor base and is held in high regard by key stakeholders. As an
organisation committed to the local community and a track record of delivery we are looking for a
key member of the team to contribute to the exciting development of the organisation.
JOB DESCRIPTION

Communications and Marketing Intern

Hours:
37.5 hours per week for 12 month period
Salary:
£14,000 - £16,000 per annum
Pension:
The Foundation will make a matching contribution of up to 7.5%
Location:
The office premises are situated on the 1s floor of Dovenby Hall in Dovenby,
near Cockermouth
Leave:
25 days per year plus two additional days at Christmas and one at Easter
(pro rata)
Review:
This post is subject to a six-month probationary period.
Overall Job Purpose
The position provides an opportunity to further develop experience in marketing, communications,
research and events management as well as gaining experience of social policy, grant making and
community philanthropy.
The aim of the role is to provide support to staff members across a range of activities and
functions. The position will be packaged as support to a range of projects to ensure effective
management of the intern’s time.
Communications and Marketing
 Work closely with the Communications Officer to successfully refresh and implement
communications plans
 Compile the Foundation’s electronic newsletter and circulate using Dotmailer

Update the Foundation’s website and generate content especially from case studies
Update website content around events and appeals such as The Big Sleep
Maximising the use of social media including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc
Ensuring press cuttings are picked out and filed accordingly
Assist in promotional material design and production using Adobe InDesign
Deliver the communications plan (production and distribution of media releases)
Support production and circulation of electronic newsletter for events e.g. The Big Sleep
Grant Making Support
 Collate and research community profiles as required
 Create case study material and assist in the preparation of fund reports
Events, Activities and Appeals Support
• Organise publicity activities including launch events and mid campaign ‘stunts’.
 Support implementation of event related communications plans
 Support preparation of publicity material and media releases as appropriate
 General duties in support of event organisation as required
 Attend pre-event briefings and attending events as required e.g Big Sleep, Rivers Ride, the
AGM plus any other events
 Provide case studies of grants in particular areas to support the Development team
 Support around fundraising as required
Other general duties
 Keep abreast of developments across the charity sector by liaising with senior staff in other
charities.
 Where appropriate, attend external seminars and workshops on behalf of the Foundation.
