Part 3 – Music
Among British music groups The Beatles are the greatest, most successful and influential
pop band of all times. They formed in 1960 in Liverpool. From 1962 the group consisted of
John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison
(lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals).
The group created over 240 songs. A lot of their singles and albums reached number one on
British and world charts. Their enormous popularity called “Beatlemania” started from their
first single Love Me Do. The new fad had a great impact on the culture of the 60s. The band
toured the world, gave concerts, made records until it broke up in 1970. The members started
their individual careers. John Lennon was murdered by his fan, outside his house in New
York in 1980. Harrison died of cancer. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are still alive.
The band’s most popular songs include: Love Me Do, Strawberry Fields Forever, All You
Need is Love, Yesterday, Let it Be, Help and many others.
The Rolling Stones – a legendary English rock band (still active) was formed in London in
1962 by Brian Jones, Ian Stewart, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman and Charlie
Watts. They have released over 200 million albums worldwide. Their most famous hits are:
Paint it Black, Lady Jane, Ruby Tuesday and Can’t Get No Satisfaction.
The Who (formed in 1964) – rose to fame in the UK with a pioneering instrument
destruction stage show.
Pink Floyd – a famous rock band (created in 1965) with its legendary singer and bass player
Roger Waters. Their most successful albums are: The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were
Here, Animals and their rock opera The Wall.
Led Zeppelin (1968) – formed by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John
Bonham, are regarded as one of the first heavy metal bands. Their most famous records are:
Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin I, II, III and IV.
Deep Purple (formed in 1968) are the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock. Their
most popular songs are: Smoke on the Water, Highway Star and Speed King.
Sir Elton John – born in 1947, a singer, songwriter, composer and pianist. Since 1967 has
made over 30 successful albums. His single Candle in the Wind has become the best selling
single in Billboard history. Elton has won a lot of international awards including Grammy
and Academy Awards. He is actively involved in the fight against Aids. Elton John was
knighted in 1998.
