BMR 3202 EFFECTS OF EXERCISE ON THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM By Vanessa Wickham Satrupa Singh EFFECTS OF EXERCISE ON THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM Long Term Effects Increased growth and Increase in oxygen strength of the muscles and demand in the tendons muscles Increased growth of capillaries around the Heat generation muscles Increased ligament and bone strength Increased range of motion Immediate Effects • The amount of oxygen consumed by the muscles during exercise increases x70 above resting levels • With regular exercise, the muscles (& tendons) get bigger, allowing them to contract with greater strength • Increased numbers of capillaries grow around the muscles, so more blood can reach them with oxygen & nutrients • Muscles become more efficient at using oxygen & can work harder for longer without tiring • Regular exercise also strengthens the ligaments around a joint, making the joint stronger & more stable EFFECTS OF EXERCISE ON THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM Hypertrophy and Increased Strength Increased in Tendon Strength Increased Myoglobin and Mitochondria Increased Tolerance to Lactic Acid Increased storage of glycogen and fat Increased muscle strength EFFECTS OF EXERCISE ON THE SKELETAL SYSTEM Increased in Bone Calcium Increased Stretch of Ligaments Increased Thickness of Hayline Cartilage Increased Production of Synovial Fluid REFERENCES • (n.d.).
