Multimedia Fair Use Guidelines • Project must be for educational purposes only! • For use in a course or personal portfolio to obtain entrance to college or to obtain a job. • May not sell the project at a later date. • Stealing is stealing!!! Motion Media • This includes videos/video clips and movies. • Up to 10% or 3 minutes, whichever is less. Text Materials • This includes books, textbooks, magazines and other written material. • Up to 10% or 1000 words, whichever is less. • Poems: – Less than 250 words: You may use entire poem, but not more than 3 poems by one poet, or 5 poems from one book may be used. – Over 250 words: 250 words may be used, but not more than 3 excerpts by a poet, or 5 excerpts from one book. Lyrics and Music Video • Up to 10%, but NEVER more than 30 seconds, from 1 piece of music. • If you change the words, the basic melody or character of the work must not change. Illustrations and Photographs • Photo or illustration may be used, BUT – No more than 5 images from 1 artist or photographer. – Not more than 10% or up to 15 photographs or illustrations (whichever is less) from one published collection of work. Numerical Data Sets • This includes copyrighted database or data table. • Up to 10% or 2500 fields or cell entries. – Field Entry is a specific item of information. – Cell Entry is the intersection where a row and a column meet on a spreadsheet. USE CAUTION • Remember that not all of your resources need to come from the Internet!!! • Remember that not all information on the Internet is “free” to use. Most is copyrighted, and some end up on the Internet illegally. • Not all information is correct! Attribution and Acknowledgement • Credit all of your sources. • If it is copyrighted, display the copyright symbol © • Use full bibliographic description (usually MLA style) to include: author, title, publisher, place and date of publication, and website URL if applicable. • Include copyright ownership information if applicable (© , year of first publication and name of copyright holder). • Credit and copyright information can be combined on a separate section (i.e.. bibliography section). • Photos and illustrations – include copyright notice and creator of the image underneath the image (when information is available). Notice of Use Restrictions • On the Opening Slide, you must include a statement that states: “This project contains materials that are included under the fair use exemption of the U.S. Copyright Law and has been prepared according to the multimedia fair use guidelines and is restricted from further use.” Citations for Bibliography Page • You will have a Bibliography or Works Cited page in your written paper. • You will have a Bibliography or Works Cited section on your multimedia presentation (if you choose to use a multimedia presentation). • Always use MLA format for you citations.
