Citation Style Guide
You must properly cite your sources within the text of your paper. We will be using the Chicago
documentation style as found in Diana Hacker, A Pocket Style Manual, 5th ed. (Pp. 207-224) as our
template for citation in class. Below are some examples of in-text citations and bibliography entries for
several types of reference materials. You will not need to do any footnotes or endnotes for class papers.
Example of in-text citations:
For an exact quote or specific information, be sure to include the page number…
Some scholars would argue that “the intensity of human use of the planet is due to the increasing
scale of operations of the economy as well as to population growth” (Townsend 2000:102).
Note that the closing quotation mark comes before the parenthetical citation and the period
follows the citation.
For general paraphrased information a page number may not be necessary…
The Tsembaga derived about 12 pounds of meat per person after killing pigs during the kaiko ritual
(Rappaport 1984).
For information presented in course lectures…
Anthropologists have long been concerned with visuality (Daniel Hoffman, Anthropology 209 Lecture,
January 5, 2011).
