Learn Well Live Well Phase 2 Learn Well Live Well Phase 2 How does Phase 2 differ from the pilot? The courses that we are offering in phase 2 are somewhat different to what we had been offering in the pilot. As we have been allocated to Group A, courses that we are now delivering have a specific focus on managing symptoms of mild to moderate mental health problems, whereas in the pilot year we had a blended approach offering traditional community learning courses as well as courses relating more to the symptoms of mild to moderate mental health problems. In the pilot, courses were concentrated in the north-east area of Sheffield. This area has its own demographic profile: many of the wards are in the top 10 most deprived wards in the country; there is high unemployment; and high incidence of common mental health problems. We used sub-contractors who were familiar with the local area to deliver the course. Now that we are in phase 2, we have expanded to provide courses across Sheffield. This means that we must adapt to meet the needs of the various populations across the city. We are continuing to offer some courses in the north-east of the city, building on what went well in the pilot; however, as we have expanded our provision, we are using more of our contractors who have specialist knowledge of engaging potential learners in their areas of the city. We have recruited three part-time learning champions (health) to complete the IAG sessions, wellbeing assessments and referrals. These learning champions (health) are working alongside existing learning champions and tutors who are focused on the recruitment and delivery of the courses. The learning champions (health) are using a more assertive and personalised recruitment approach to build relationships between learners, learning champions and tutors What the barriers have been and how we’ve overcome them: We have so far put on four courses. A positive has been that, once eligible learners were identified, there has been a good retention of learners. One of our courses is now in week 3 and we have managed to retain all learners from the initial IAG/enrolment session. However, two of the courses were not able to run because of low recruitment and low numbers of eligible learners. Learn Well Live Well Phase 2 We have learnt a number of things that we can do to improve this: ● Utilise relationships with statutory and voluntary organisations across Sheffield to promote the project and increase recruitment ● Tailor our marketing so that learners are aware that the research has specific eligibility criteria ● Tailor the marketing and naming of courses so that they appeal to a wide demographic ● Consult potential learners about what makes a course attractive to them, and use this to tailor our approach. This learner consultation has been one of the strengths of the pilot study ● Buy additional provision in order to ensure we get a full data set for 261 learners
