Theatre Appreciation 3 Contact Hours Course Description This course is designed to increase appreciation of contemporary theatre. Emphasis is given to the theater as an art through the study of history and theory of drama and the contributions of playwrights, actors, directors, designers, and technicians to modern media. Attendance at a theatrical production will be required. II. Prerequisite None III. Course Textbook, Manuals, or Other Required Materials Required texts vary by semester. Please consult with the Campus Bookstore for current requirements and availability. IV. Course Learning Outcomes A. B. C. V. The student will discover that the complex art of theatre is woven into a fabric of human culture. The student will understand the art of theatre is connected with other aspects of human experience. The student will explore the concept of interaction and the levels of interaction that can be found in any theatre experience. Outline of Course Topics A. B. Basic Concepts 1. Understanding the nature of theatre and audience 2. Basic understanding of structure and theme in the context of both performance and dramatic literature 3. Appreciation of theatre history, dramatic literature, and the process of play production through the experience of live theatre Cultural Perspective 1. Appreciate theatrical performance and dramatic literature within diverse social contexts 2. Cultivate an awareness of diverse perspectives and values of others as presented in a variety of plays and productions 3. C. VI. Methods of Instruction A. B. C. D. E. F. G. VII. Scene Design 5. Costume and Makeup 6. Lighting, sound and multimedia 7. Performance, audience and critic Planning representative selection of plays to discuss in class. Provide opportunity and recommendation of specific plays for students to attend. Lecture and discussion on material presented in class. Group discussion evaluating and analyzing theatre productions. Study of video as an aid to oral presentation. Read and discuss selections from the text. Field trips to local drama productions in the area and/or at the college Evaluation and Assessment Course Grade Assessment A. The student will take at three examinations that are devised to assess student comprehension of assigned reading material. 50% of the final grade will be based on these tests. B. Students will take two examinations based on their comprehension of the semester notes. 33% of the final grade will be based on the final examination. C. Each student will attend the current semester theatrical production presented by the Theatre Department at Northeast Alabama Community College. The student will acquire a ticket and program that and will be required to have both initialed by the professor at the end of the performance they attend. 17% of the final grade will be based on verified attendance at this production. D. Grades will be based upon: A= 90-100% or 270-300 Points; B=80-89% or 240269 Points; C=70-79% or 210-239 Points; D=60-69% or 180-209 Points; F= below 60% or 179 Points and fewer. VIII. Attendance Students are expected to attend all classes for which they are registered. Students who are unable to attend class regularly, regardless of the reason of circumstance, should withdraw from that class before poor attendance interferes with the student’s ability to achieve the objectives required in the course. Withdrawal from class can affect eligibility for federal financial aid. IX.
