Stress Response Sequence
1. Alarm- First stage, when the body and
mind go on high alert. Body produces
adrenaline to prepare the body to respond
to a stressor. The heart speeds up, providing
more blood to the brain and muscles.
Breathing becomes faster, providing more
oxygen to the brain and muscles.
2. Resistance
–The second stage, when the body
tries to repair damage from the
stressful event and return to its
normal state. Physical resistance
reaches its peak, that is why people
have been known to do amazing
feats of strength.
3. Fatigue
• Third stage, resulting in a tired feeling that
lowers one’s activity level of activity.
– Physical fatigue – build up of lactic acid
– Pathological fatigue – overworking the
body’s defenses in fighting disease
– Psychological fatigue – constant worry,
depression, boredom, and isolation
Stress and You
• Each person handles stress differently based on
personality

likely to develop heart disease or other health
issues
– Type B – “laid-back” non-competitive type less
likely to develop problems
