DNA: Pandora’s Box Questions
Please answer all of the questions below for DNA: Pandora’s Box.
1. When James Watson is criticized for “playing God,” he responds by saying that
he believes it is best to control evolution if possible and end “genetic injustice.”
But he also says that he, unlike the Nazis, does not believe in eugenics by death.
How is his “eugenics” different from the eugenics practiced by the Nazis? In
answering the question, be sure to include 1) the definition of eugenics generally,
2) your understanding of Watson’s genetic engineering and 3) the Nazis belief
that destruction of the “unfit” was necessary to create a superior race.
2. When Dr. Watson is criticized by those who believe eliminating certain mental
illnesses (such as major depression) through genetic selection would rob the
world of a rich diversity—and a lot of creative and talented people—how does he
respond? Do you agree or not with his defense of his position and why or why
not?
3. What do you think was the purpose of showing Dr. Watson talking with the
parents of a son with Down syndrome?
