Title of the speakers: RELIEVING MENTAL AND PHYSICAL PROBLEMS THROUGH DENTISTRY AND APPLIED KINESIOLOGY Authors: John Diamond, M.D., DIBAK (USA) [email protected] Dr. John Diamond, M.D., DPM, FRANZCP, MRCPsych., FIAPM, DIBAK, is a pioneering figure in alternative and holistic medicine. He began his career in psychiatry but expanded into holistic medicine. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatry, a Foundation Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK), a Member of the American Holistic Medical Association, a Diplomate of the International College of Applied Kinesiology and a Fellow and past President of the International Academy of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Diamond has held numerous senior clinical and university teaching appointments in clinical psychiatry, the basic sciences and the humanities, and is a widely recognized best-selling author of over twenty books. Joseph Da Cruz, DDS (AUSTRALIA) Dr. Joseph Da Cruz is a holistic dentist from Australia who has been interested in the areas of health, nutrition, functional medicine, psychology, Chinese and Indian medicine, biochemistry and blood chemistries for many years. He was born in India and received his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in 1976 and his Masters in Operative Dentistry in 1979 both from the University of Mumbai (Bombay) India. He migrated to Australia and has worked in his own private practice in Canberra for the last 25 years and attracts a wide patient base that includes patients traveling from the USA, England and Germany, as well as from all over Australia. He is a member of the ADA (Australian Dental Association) and a founding member of ASOMAT (Australian Society of Oral Medicine and Toxicology). He is a Fellow of ACNEM (Australian College of Nutrition and Environmental Medicine). Institution: Life Energy Foundation, New York, USA Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, USA Structure Contents: Problem definition: How to relieve TMJ, migraine, neck and back pain, crooked teeth, sleep apnea, mouth breathing, reduction of sympathetic nervous system overactivity, startle reflexes, and some psychiatric problems through dentistry. Drs. Diamond and Da Cruz have worked together for many years to find a solution to these problems. Dr. Diamond’s showed his work with Dr. Willie May back in the 1970’s to Dr. Goodheart, and this was the start of the ongoing AK work with the TMJ, and later the hyoid bone, and the beginning of the continuing and everexpanding relationship between AK and dentistry. Recognizing the supreme importance of dentistry, Dr. Diamond has carefully examined the mouth and facial structure of nearly everyone who consults him. He came to realize that a holistic approach must not only include the dental area but perhaps should even start there. One problem in finding a solution to these problems through a dental appliance is that standard appliances lock the maxilla along with the teeth. If the cranial sutures are jammed they inhibit the Cranial Respiratory Impulse (CRI), the continuous pulsation in the cranium whose strength is essential for optimum health. Another problem is that many standard appliances use metal across the midline, which can be a source of stress. In designing an appliance that would work for the mental and physical problems outlined, these two problems were also considered. ©John Diamond, MD and Dr. Joseph DaCruz, DDS 1 Patients and methods: Psychiatric and dental patients (adults and children) Drs. Diamond and Da Cruz have developed the Splint Orthodontic Myofunctional Appliance (SOMA) which overcomes the physical and mental problems listed above. The SOMA has been specially designed to counteract both of the problems usually found with appliances which have been mentioned. It fits onto the upper teeth in a particular way so as not to inhibit CRI. And its metal forms a circle, a design which does not stress the wearer. It gently expands the bony structure of the upper palate without pain, aids orthodontic correction with great efficiency, as its design avoids the fight-back of facial muscles produced by regular appliances; and it helps lessen temporomandibular dysfunction by decompressing the TM joints and encouraging muscle relaxation. Tufts University School of Dental Medicine was so impressed with the design and results of the SOMA that they have expressed an interest in a joint research study. The role of AK in this appliance is that it works optimally when it is tested for the exact amount of opening required. All AK doctors should be able to obtain this appliance for their patients and then be actively involved in the monitoring of when an adjustment is needed. Doctors will find that some of their patients who have not shown improvement will now respond better to treatment and improve at a faster rate. Results: The benefits produced by the SOMA appliance are far more than just orthodontic and facial. It has helped relieve different types of chronic pain including neck and back, respiratory problems, and immune system conditions, TMJ, migraine, crooked teeth, sleep apnea, mouth breathing, greatly reduces the startle reflexes of infancy whose continuation into adult life is one of the chief underlying causes of all stress reactions, reduction of sympathetic nervous system overactivity, and some psychiatric problems with a reduction or complete stoppage of medications for the above conditions. In addition there is improvement in swallowing, speech, eating, breathing, and sleeping. A powerpoint presentation has been prepared which will include many case histories of children and adults (see last page of this abstract for one case history example with photographs.) All patients will have agreed to have their name and/or their photographs exhibited as well as any personal details about their condition. Conclusion: The SOMA dental appliance has had great success in helping both physical and mental problems. The fact that it has been so successful in helping mental problems has been a very exciting discovery. ©John Diamond, MD and Dr. Joseph DaCruz, DDS 2 Case History: Mrs. S is a patient who wore braces as a teenager to improve her smile. Because her appliance did not address the underlying causes of her dental problems, malocclusion (crooked teeth) reestablished itself, along with mouth-breathing, narrowing of the palatal arches and distalizing of the jaws due to tightness in the throat. This was accompanied by a pattern of stressrelated clenching and squeezing of facial muscles along with this severe migraines, and neck and back pain. Within three months of wearing the SOMA, her lower jaw had moved forward and she was properly able to close her mouth and to breathe through the nose As a result her palate widened, her teeth straightened and her migraines and neck and back pain have totally disappeared.
