digits
The symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
7, 8, 9 that we use to name or
write a number
line plot
A diagram that organizes
data using a number line.
bar graph
A graph that uses bars to
show data.
tally chart
A chart that contains tally
marks.
tally mark
A mark that stands for one of
something. Tally marks are
usually organized in
groups of 5.
pictograph
A graph that uses pictures to
show data. Each picture
usually stands for more than
one so be sure to find the key.
temperature
A scale used to measure the warmth or
chill of something. It is written with a
º (degree mark) after a digit along with
a C or F to tell which scale is being
used. (Fahrenheit or Celsius)
degrees
$ or ¢
Symbols used with digits to show
amounts of money. A ¢ shows
hundredths of a dollar. A $ is usually
used with a decimal to show whole and
partial dollars.
decimal point
The point (.) separating the
parts from the wholes in a
number.
perimeter
The distance around a figure.
product
The answer in a multiplication
problem.
sum
The answer to an addition
problem.
difference
The answer to a subtraction
problem.
quotient
The answer in a division
problem.
divide
To separate an amount into
smaller, EQUAL groups to find
the number of groups or how
many in each group.
multiplication
An operation on two or more
numbers that gives the
product.
addition
An operation on two or more
numbers that gives the sum.
a.m.
Letters used to show time from
midnight until 1 minute to noon.
p.m.
Letters used to show time from
noon to one minute before
midnight.
number sentence
A written equation or
inequality using numbers and
symbols.
2+2=4 or 2+2>3
equation
A mathematical sentence that
shows the equality of two
mathematical expressions. It
has an equal sign. (=)
mathematical expression
A group of digits that shows a
number or amount but does not
have an equal sign. (2+2 is an
expression to represent 4)
estimate
A rough calculation of an
amount. It is usually noted
with the word “about”.
round
To find ABOUT how many by
expressing a number to the
nearest 10, 100, 1000 or so on.
order
Arranging numbers or items in a
line to show them getting
larger or smaller.
ordinal numbers
Number words we use to show
order or position.
(first, second, third, etc.)
fraction
A number that shows a part of
a set.
denominator
The number below the bar of a
fraction. In the fraction, “½”
2 is the denominator.
numerator
The number above the bar of a
fraction. In the fraction, “½”
1 is the numerator.
parallel
Lines that do not intersect.
intersect
A point where two lines cross
each other.
polygon
A simple, closed plane figure of
three or more line segments.
line
A straight path that goes on
and on forever in opposite
directions.
line segment
A part of a line. It has two
endpoints.
quadrilateral
A four-sided polygon.
triangle
A polygon with three sides and
three angles.
ray
A part of a line that has one
end point and goes on forever
in one direction.
angle
A figure formed by two rays
with a single end point.
right angle
An angle that is formed by two
rays that are perpendicular.
They measure 90º.
perpendicular
Two lines or rays that are at
right angles.
parallelogram
A quadrilateral whose
opposite sides are parallel.
