Field Museum Extensions
a. Related Exhibitions.
1. Evolving Planet. Visit Evolving Planet to make connections on the large
numbers associated with geologic time scales, also tie in the extinction
rate located at the end of the evolving planet to dots activity(calculate the
number of extinct species in a minute, hour, day, year.
2. Earth Sciences. See how the structure of minerals is determined by their
internal molecular composition. Use minerals to describe the chemical and
physical characteristics of matter. Describe how crystalline structures form
at molecular levels. Compare the large quartz crystal to smaller ones with
dimensional analysis.
b. Harris Educational Loan Center.
1. Cork Exhibit Case. Have students count the chambers in different cork
samples and calculate how many would be contained in a cork board,
stump, or tree.
2. Patterns in Nature Experience Box. Use math skills to discover the
patterns and symmetry in the natural world around us.
3. Mineral Match Experience Box. Bring minerals to your classroom, and
have a hands-on activity to explore mineral and crystal structures. See how
the structure of minerals in determined by their internal molecular
composition.
