Propaganda Outline
I.
Purpose
A. Political - The purpose of political propaganda is to “seek the systematic
enlightenment necessary to win supporters to a worldview”. This includes
getting supporters to vote for someone or to vote one way or another on an
upcoming decision
B. Entertainment – To send a message about what is going on now or what has
happened in the past. It is also used to show what the ideal way of life is. It
is
also used to show how people should live their lives.
C. Other – War Time Propaganda – The purpose of war time propaganda is to
boost people’s patriotism, to get people to support the troops, to make the
enemy look as evil as possible, and to get people to enlist.
II.
Famous Examples –
A. Television –
B. Movies – James Cameron’s Avatar – “It can be read on several levels – a
critique of the Iraq War, an assault on the US-led War on Terror, a slick
morality tale about the ‘evils’ of Western imperialism, a futuristic take on the
conquest of America, and the treatment of native Americans (Gardiner).”
C. Cartoons – Uncle Sam and his “I Want You” poster.

World War II
A. Nazi Regime/Hitler – There were two main uses behind WWII Nazi
propaganda, to serve two main Nazi agendas. It was important to convince the
public to fight and that it was necessary to fight”. They also used propaganda
to promote labor and to convince the public it was necessary to “dehumanize
the German Jews (Nazi Propaganda).” An example of a Nazi propaganda
poster would be:
B.
C. US/Allied Forces – Propaganda Posters that promoted buying war bonds,
saving vital resources, and enlisting. The US also used propaganda to promote
troop support as well as to make the enemy look as evil as possible. An

Vietnam
A. The NVA used propaganda to win over the hearts and minds of the South.
They used propaganda to make people in the South believe the NVA can help
them and give them a better life then the Americans can. They also used
propaganda to entertain troops as well as promote patriotism.
B. US – Propaganda was used both to promote the war as well as make the war
seem to be an awful and unjust. Propaganda included articles, pictures, and
posters. Some propaganda showed the horrors of the NVA and some showed
