Deutsche Bank wanted to develop a prototype data center space that would achieve the highest energy savings
of all their facilities. AKF Group worked side by side with Deutsche Bank evaluating several cooling schemes as
well as developing associated CFD models to evaluate the potential of each scheme. Ultimately, AKF
recommended a high-density, low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) Data Center – a solution that is more
commonly used in wide-open spaces and in climates such as the Pacific Northwest or Canada. This presentation
will explain the process used and the benefits of designing and building a modern air-side economizer system in
an existing building and in an urban environment. (Ros)
Deutsche Bank was interested in developing a prototype data center space that would achieve the highest
energy savings of all their facilities. AKF worked side by side with Deutsche Bank evaluating several cooling
schemes as well as developing associated CFD models in an effort to evaluate the potential of each scheme.
Initially the Pods started out at 1000 sq ft each and as the solution matured we were able to reduce the pod size
to 600 sq ft and support 250kw worth of load, which equates to over 400 w/sq ft. Once the schemes were
further developed, detailed CFD modeling was developed to identify the possible failure scenarios. These results
were invaluable and provided AKF and the Owner with insight into special design considerations for the systems.
