World War II In September 1939, Britain went to war with Germany. This was because Hitler invaded Poland. Adolf Hitler was the German leader and Winston Churchill was the British prime minister. During the war, German fighter planes bombed British towns and cities to destroy war machinery being built there. When there was an air raid, people tried to keep safe in air-raid shelters away from the bombing. Many children were evacuated to the countryside where they would be safe.
