Memories of Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall Photo Exhibition

Come pay tribute to the grand dames of the Singapore arts scene. Witness memories that
circle the Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall, taken before they close for restoration,
through this photo exhibition. Photographs are contributed by winners of the photography
contest organised jointly by the Singapore Arts Festival 2010 with the Tanjong Pagar
Photographic Club.

Catch local poets share their writing experience inspired by winning photographs of the

The People’s Exhibition: I want to remember... the old performing places
This exhibition is to reconnect people with memories of old performing spaces such as the
old Drama Centre on Fort Canning Rise and the National Theatre along River Valley Road.
View your photographs, collectibles and items that bring back memories of old performing
spaces in Singapore as we celebrate and remember them.

Picnic Under the Stars
Date: 20 November 2010
Time: 6 - 9 pm
Venue: Former National, Theatre Site (Open field along River Valley Road)
Admission: Free
Officially opened in 1968, the National Theatre was built as a cultural symbol to
commemorate Singapore’s attainment of self government. Fondly known as the “People’s
Theatre”, it was a significant landmark for Singaporeans to congregate. Due to structural
reasons, the National Theatre was demolished in 1986.
As we remember the old performing spaces in Singapore, this event will see the People’s
Theatre come “alive” again! Have fun communing with like-minded people and catch a series
of film screenings which include short films by local director, Royston Tan. For the picnic,
artists and the public are invited to share their memories of performances and experiences
of the National Theatre through a song, dance or story. Special picnic baskets will be given
away to the first 20 persons who share their personal stories and memories of the 20
November 2010 performing space.

Festival Goes Green
Going green is fun with interesting ways of recycling old materials, giving them a new lease
of life. Coming on the heels of the well-received Festival Goes Green in April 2010, the
Singapore Arts Festival brings you more great ideas on recycling
Eco Urban Farming
Date: 26 November 2010
Time: 9am – 5pm
Venue: Gardenasia, 240 Neo Tiew Crescent (Free bus-pick up and drop off at Mayflower
Primary School)
Admission: $45 (via cash or cheque, includes lunch and materials for workshops)
Step into the urban farm setting and explore how you can bring nature into our urban
landscape. Together with a half-day tour of the farm, children under 12 years old and
parents will get hands-on at the potting and mini garden workshop.
Transform the Tees
Date: 4 December 2010
Time: 2 – 5pm
Venue: Multi-purpose Hall, Pathlight School 5, Ang Mo Kio Ave 10
Admission: Free
Stretch your imagination with this question – what items can you make out of your old Tees?
Join us and find out how creative we can get when it comes to recycling old tees –
transforming them to a water bottle holder, cushion cover, pencil case holder or simply a
“new” tee shirt!
Youth Arts Camp
Date: 25 – 27 October 2010
Time: 8.30am – 5pm
Venue: The Arts House, 1 Old Parliament Lane
Admission: $200 per student (Includes lunch, tea and materials for all three days)
It’s time to unwind and learn more about the performing arts! Organised specially for 14 and
15 years old, you will learn devising, improvisation, viewpoints and scriptwriting. At the end
of the camp, there will be a mini showcase where you will get the chance to flaunt your talent
by sharing your masterpiece with the public.
So, join us at the Youth Arts Camp and learn from big names of the local theatre scene such
as Natalie Hennedige, Artistic Director of Cake Productions and Ian Loy, an experienced
actor and director, just to name a few.

Here’s a million-dollar question: If there is a Kids Arts Village for kids to express their artistry,
and to be run by kids for kids, what will you like to see?
For the very first time, the Singapore Arts Festival has put in place a Kids Advisory Panel of
10 - 12 year olds to help curate and imagine the first Kids Arts Village. This October, come
on down to the Central Public Library to cast your vote for your favourite Kids Arts Village
envisioned by the Kids Advisory Panel. Interact with our Kids Advisory Panel and Festival
Ambassadors as they guide you through the works.
There will also be special appearances by an architect and two set designers who will be
giving talks on what to consider when designing a space, and how to make a village model
respectively.

Master Class: Learning and Teaching through Stories

Professor Joe Winston is back with a new hands-on workshop specially developed for
teachers, artists and workshop leaders who work with young people through stories. Each
session will focus on a story approach to look at the teaching of values in character building
and moral education. His self-developed pedagogy is easily deployed, flexible, adaptable,
and readily transferable to any good stories.
Professor Winston is the Associate Professor of Drama and Theatre Education at the
University of Warwick, UK and also co-ordinates the acclaimed MA in Drama and Theatre
Education at Warwick. He is well known for his lively approach to drama pedagogy firmly
rooted in successful classroom and studio practices. His latest book, Beauty and Education
is published in the Routledge Philosophy of Education series in 2009.
