It is estimated that 1 in 6 people in the UK are living with hearing loss and that 6.3 million of these are people over the age of 65 – that’s two thirds of the UK’s over 65 population*. The good news is that it’s never too late to do something about it. What causes hearing loss? Hearing loss usually occurs naturally as part of the ageing process. However, regular exposure to loud noises, heritage, and some illnesses can also cause hearing loss. In around 90% of all cases, the tiny hair cells in the inner ear have become damaged. This limits the ability to detect sounds to send to the brain. What symptoms indicate that I may have a hearing loss? Signs of hearing loss can include problems hearing certain sounds or tones clearly, such as birdsong or higher pitched voices, and distinguishing similar sounding words. Other signs include difficulty in cross-conversations or in environments with background noise, hearing at distance such as meetings and listening to the TV or radio. I’ve been advised that hearing aids will not help me. Is there anything else that can help? At Amplifon, we aim to help everyone experience better hearing health.
