About Friendship Works
Friendship Works is a mentoring charity that helps children and young people who are having
problems in their home and social environments, to have the best possible childhood. We achieve
this through recruiting and training long-term adult volunteer mentors who make a commitment to
mentor a child or young person in their community for a minimum of two years.
Friendship Works helps children and young people aged 5-16 who lack strong adult support
networks in their lives and who have a range of complex behavioural, educational and emotional
issues. As a result, they face significant barriers to making a successful transition into adulthood and
need intensive long-term support to help them improve their future prospects and life chances.
Friendship Works began in 1977. Originally called ‘Big Friend, Little Friend’, the charity grew out of a
one-year pilot initiative that provided adult mentors to children and young people living in single
parent families. Today, Friendship Works is the UK’s longest standing adult volunteer mentoring
charity. We currently reach over 150 children and young people aged 5-16 across three London
boroughs of Camden, Islington and Southwark.
We are one of the founding members of the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation, the umbrella
organisation for mentoring in England and Wales. In 2007, we received the Queen’s Award for
Voluntary Service in recognition of the outstanding contribution of volunteer mentors to change the
lives of children through friendship.
