Shapes Vocabulary:
Acute angles
Definition:
Example:
Smaller angles and less than 90°
Right angles
exactly 90° angles, think of
corners on a table
Obtuse angles
Angles in between a right angle
and a straight line.
Equilateral Triangle
A triangle that has 3 equal side
lengths
Isosceles Triangle
A triangle with 2 sides that are
equal and 1 that is not.
Scalene Triangle
A triangle that has no equal
sides.
Square
Equal sides and all right angles
Rectangle
The opposite sides are equal,
has only right angles
Trapezoid
1 pair of opposite sides are
parallel (or will never touch)
Parallelogram
Opposite sides are parallel.
Parallelograms include squares
and rectangles.

Multiples and Factors
Multiples= Example: multiples of 3 are 3,6,9,12,15,18,21….There is no ending for multiples.
Factors= all numbers that a particular number can be divided by evenly
Example: factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6, and 12 (1 x12, 2 x 6, 3 x 4)
Least Common Multiple= the lowest multiple that is the same between two numbers
Examples: The least common multiple of 4 and 6 is 12 because the multiples of 4 are
4,8,12,16… and the multiples of 6 are 6,12,18…, therefore the lowest one in common is
a 12.
Greatest Common Factor= the largest multiple that is the same between two numbers.
Examples: The greatest common factor of 18 and 24 is 6 because the factors of 18 are
1,2,3,6,9, and 18. The factors of 24 are 1,2,3,4,6,8,12, and 24. Therefore, the largest
one that they have in common is a 6.
Fractions
Numerator= top number in a fraction, the number of items that are shaded or the PART of
the whole
Denominator= bottom number in a fraction, the TOTAL number of items
Example: XXX00 The fraction for X’s, is
⅗ the fraction for 0’s is ⅖.
Equivalent Fractions= any two fractions that are equal
*To find an equivalent fraction, multiply both the top and bottom numbers by the SAME
number, other than 0 or 1, OR divide both the top and bottom number by the SAME
number.
Example:
1/4 x 2/2 = 2/8
Simplest Form= a way to write a fraction using the lowest possible numbers
*To find the simplest form, divide BOTH the top and bottom numbers by any common
factor other than 0 or 1. Continue to divide by common factors, until you cannot divide by
anything other than 0 or 1.

Grade 4
Example: 24/32 The factors of 24 are 1,2,3,4,6,8,12, and 24.
The factors of 32 are 1,2,4,8,16, and 32.
You could divide by 24/32 by 2/2 and get 12/16, then divide 12/16 by 2/2 and get 6/8, then
divide 6/8 by 2/2 and get 3/4.
Or, you could divide 24/32 by 4/4 and get 6/8, and then divide 6/8 by 2/2 and get 3/4.
Or, you could divide 24/32 by 8/8 and get 3/4.
Fraction/decimal pairings your student should know.

Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
3,5,6,8,8
Mean= The average number in a set of data. To find the average, you add all the numbers
together and divide by the however many numbers you added. For example, the mean for
the above set is 3+5+6+8+8=30 and 30 divided by 5 (because there are 5 numbers) is 6.
Therefore, the mean is 6.
Median= When you order a set of numbers from least to greatest, the median is the middle
number. Example: In the above set, the number in the middle is 6, so the median is 6.
Mode= The mode is the number that occurs the most often in a set of numbers. Example:
In the set above, the number that occurs the most is 8, therefore the mode is 8.
Range= In a set of numbers, the range is the difference between the largest and smallest
numbers. For the set above, you would subtract the largest (8) minus the smallest (3),
therefore 8 – 3 = 5 and the range is 5.
