Alexander Rd., Moonee Ponds, 3039 Phone: 9377 3400 Fax: 9375 7211 Outline of the post: The Inner West Area Mental Health Service (IWAMHS) is a public psychiatric service covering the central business district and inner north western suburbs of Melbourne. The integrated Community Teams at Inner West are multi- disciplinary mental health teams. The inpatient unit, emergency department mental health service (EMH) and the University Department of Psychiatry are located at Royal Melbourne Hospital. Length of the post: This is a six month post Supervision: A Consultant psychiatrist will supervise the GP Registrar .This will include weekly one to one contact , ongoing contact re patient care, handover and clinical review team meetings. What work will the registrar be doing? The registrar will spend their time between the Continuing Care Unit (CCU) and ‘Waratah’ the community clinic. The key responsibilities in the role are: To work as a medical officer in the multidisciplinary team, both in the community clinic, the CCU and as required the hospital. To conduct a comprehensive patient review of psychiatric and medical issues with attendance at clinical review meetings in a multidisciplinary setting in the community To participate in a program for the monitoring of cardiovascular risk factors and other health issues (non mental health) in patients managed within the clinic To work in the CCU a 20 bed psychiatric rehabilitation unit. Patients in this unit generally stay between 6 months and 2 years, and there is a focus on psychosocial rehabilitation for patients with significant disability due to mental illness. On call roster for the IW-RMH (about 1:14- same roster as IW Psychiatry Registrars). Skills to be gained within the post: This post would be beneficial in a number of ways: Developing advanced assessment skills in mental health and management in a community setting Develop competence at prescribing a range of psychotropic medications Understanding medical co-morbidity in patients with serious mental illness. Developing knowledge of the Mental Health Act and opportunity to attend Mental Health Tribunal Hearings with patients and write reports. Be involved with and therefore become more familiar with the services associated with mental health care in the community and how to access these. Suitability for the post/ any prior skills required? The position is situated within a team. The capacity to conduct a basic mental health assessment will be required, but will also form a basis for improved skills. A basic knowledge of psychopharmacology will also be expected. Hours: The position is full time and registrars are rostered to work 43 hours a week including 5 hours paid dedication training time (as per the Award). They are also expected to be on call one night a fortnight and 1:5 weekends. Education opportunities include attendance at Grand Rounds and the Colloquium at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Journal Club with other Psychiatry Registrars. An orientation program providing an overview of the Community Teams at Waratah will be provided and access to educational meetings related to GP liaison and care of patients with serious mental illness in Primary Care will be facilitated by clinicians at Waratah.
