As per our recent discussions and review of existing data, one or more of these plants may potentially be the provincially red listed streambank lupine (Lupinus rivularis). Hopefully these data and associated photographs will facilitate an accurate identification. Photograph 1 – Study Area August 1, 2017 Page 2 of 3 Plant Data The site is at approximately 78 m elevation. UTM location is 10U 517778 5459670. Five lupine plants were documented. At least two separate species were present, possibly three. Mostly likely candidates for Lupinus rivularis are Plants 1 and 5 below (Photographs on ftp site, instruction at end of memo). Plant 1: No basal leaves Structure is somewhat sprawling but likely due to steep slope conditions Very woody stem at base approx. 1” dia. like a shrub, then woody mid-stem to newest growth which is hollow Stem is very slightly hairy 7-9 leaflets per leaf Leaflets have fine hairs beneath and none to very slightly hairy on upper surface, fine hairlike point at tip Relatively short petioles, petioles branching singly from stem Very few flowers left, blue, no hair on banner, possible very slight fuzz at edges Seed pods dry, open and mottled Photo No. 659-674, 681-690,721,722 Petiole Length (mm) Leaflet Length (mm) Leaflet Width (mm) Leaf Width (mm) 53 47 10 84 43 35 8 58 43 40 10 72 46 39 8 74 55 40 8 69 Plant 5(same species as plant 1): Same as above in overall description and measurements Plant 2: Basal leaves present (Lupinus polyphylus?) with 13 leaflets Woody stem, lightly hairy, laying along ground, very little of plant present Upper branches have leaves with relatively short petioles Upper leaves have 7-9 leaflets with fine tips No flowers present Pods mottled and hairy Photo No. 675-680 Petiole Length (mm) Leaflet Length (mm) Leaflet Width (mm) Leaf Width (mm) 45 50 86 12 50 67 124 18 78 66 125 18 August 1, 2017 Page 3 of 3 Plant 3: Basal leaves present Upright structure Stem hollow Petioles relatively long and clustered at stem Leaves have 11 – 13 leaflets, hairy on upper surface, very hairy below No flowers present Pods open and mottled green and dark grey Photo No. 691-699 Petiole Length (mm) Leaflet Length (mm) Leaflet Width (mm) Leaf Width (mm) 160 85 15 145 110 - 170 - 225 - Plant 4: Basal leaves present Only basal leaves present with very large, soft, limp leaves Long leaflets with hairy upper and lower surfaces Petioles >300 mm No flowers present No pods present Photo No. 700-704 Billi Gowans, M.R.M., R.P.Bio.
