Unit title: Web Design for the Fashion Industry Credit points: 20 Unit code: FFD516 FHEQ level: 5 School: Art, Design and Fashion Unit designation: Traditional Programme group: Fashion, Design and Communication Unit delivery model: CD Max & Min Student no.: N/A TOTAL STUDENT WORKLOAD Students are required to attend and participate in all the formal scheduled sessions for the unit. Students are also expected to manage their directed learning and independent study in support of the unit. PRE-REQUISITES AND CO-REQUISITES: None UNIT DESCRIPTION This practical unit will introduce the student to the unique challenges of creating graphics to be viewed on digital devices, as opposed to traditional print media or textiles. The student will research a variety of digital design outcomes within the province of fashion. They will draw on visual reference from a broad range of sources. They will investigate the possibilities afforded by different channels, and develop an understanding of the merits of delivering different types of content or design for a particular audience. Through technical instruction and independent learning, the student will gain an understanding of the technical requirements of delivering digital content. LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of the unit, students should be able to: Knowledge and Understanding K1 Demonstrate understanding of current and future developments within the field of web design for the fashion industry K2 Demonstrate visual literacy in Cognitive Skills C1 Formulate creative and innovative solutions to a range of fashion and graphic design problems Practical and Professional Skills P1 Select and explore appropriate software Transferable and Key Skills T1 Effectively utilise current technologies in the production of a web design outcome AREAS OF STUDY Students will study the processes and knowledge required to design for digital applications. In doing so, they will cover: Basic technical knowledge of digital content Research and analysis of existing related content The use of a broad range of visual reference to inspire a theme or direction The design process from initial idea through concept development The development, sourcing or adaptation of a User Interface that is appropriate for a particular audience or application Different channels and types of content; a basic technical knowledge of how these may be delivered LEARNING AND TEACHING STRATEGY A series of group tutorials/seminars, personal tutorials and practical projects will explore the design process throughout the unit. Students will be involved in discussion groups where they will be able to analyse and receive feedback on their work and the work of other students. Seminars will provide work in progress discussion points and assist in the development of verbal presentation skills, dissemination of information and good practice. The seminars cover the collation and analysis of visual research, the development of an initial design concept, and the evaluation of the students’ work. The seminars offer an opportunity for the students to discuss one another’s work, and to share examples of independently researched animation or motion graphics. The production and presentation of individual sketchbooks will demonstrate the development of ideas which will contribute to the final design outcome. Technical sessions provide the necessary instruction to use software for the creation either of simple sites, applications or content. ASSESSMENT STRATEGY Summative assessment will be based on the completion of the final outcome as stipulated in the brief, and will be measured against the learning outcomes. This summative assessment is appropriate because the student’s work can be judged from initial concept through to the final outcome. Formative feedback will be staged at regular intervals and will include both peer and self-assessment strategies. ASSESSMENT AE1 weighting: assessment type: length/duration: On-line submission: Grade Marking: Anonymous marking: AE2 50% Project As per industry standards Yes Yes No weighting: assessment type: length/duration: 50% Portfolio 20 pages* On-line submission: Grade Marking: Anonymous marking: Yes Yes No *Please note: This is an equivalence, not a requirement. AGGREGATION OF MARKS The marks for each element of assessment will be aggregated to give an overall mark for the unit. RE-ASSESSMENT ARRANGEMENTS Students eligible for reassessment will be expected to resubmit the element they have failed addressing any shortcomings identified in the summative assessment feedback. In addition the student should submit a 500 word evaluation detailing any amendments and explaining how they have responded to feedback.
