Bellwork:
Imagine traveling deep below the surface of the
Earth; describe what you think you might see
and feel.
This week’s MISSION!
• We will become earth scientists as we dive
deep into the layers of the earth and explore
what they are made of and investigate why
the continents have moved so much since
earth was created.
Supplies….
• Who remembered to work on their Earth
model project due Friday April 22?
• Please bring these in by Friday!
Discovery Ed Video….
• We are about to watch a video that discusses
the Earth’s interior….
• As you listen to the video, write down 3
important facts you hear from the video into
your notebook
• We will share these after the video…

“Earth’s Layers
Foldable”
Glue this into
your
interactive
notebooks.
Write in notebook:
• The Earth is mostly composed of rock
Write in notebook:
• (3/4) of the Earth’s surface is covered by water
(liquid water and frozen water)
Write in notebook:
• Composition of the Earth:
• 4 Distinct Layers:
– Crust
– Mantle
– Outer Core
– Inner Core
4 Layers of the Earth –which layer is
most dense?
4 Layers of the Earth –which layer is
least dense?
Increased density as we go to
the center of earth
• The 4 layers have different densities which
causes them to separate
• Least dense = crust
• Most dense = inner core
Video
• “A Journey Inside the Earth” (6.27 minutes)
• Journey inside the Earth
4 corners ….on a blank page!
Draw this diagram in your notebook now….
Crust
Mantle
Outer Core
Inner Core
Color
Crust-blue
Mantle-Yellow
Outer Core-Orange
Inner Core-Red
Color lightly so the facts can be read

Write
in
notebook:
The Earth’s Crust: (blue corner)
•
Thin, solid outer layer
Least dense layer
2 types: continental crust
oceanic crusts
» Oceanic Crusts:
• under the oceans
• More dense (because the ocean compresses it)
• Thinner
» Continental Crust:
• under the continents
• Less dense
• Thicker
Contains plates that move over time.
•
The crust is composed of plates that slide
around on top of the section below it.
• This section is very thin compared to other
layers of Earth (between 5 and 25 miles thick)
and it is very hard and rigid.
Write in notebook:
• The Earth’s Mantle: (yellow
corner)

•
below the crust
Made of silicon, magnesium, iron, oxygen
Has CONVECTION CURRENTS: Thick, hot, convective layer.
This is the largest layer - about 1,800 miles thick!
• The mantle is made up of incredibly hot,
semisolid rock (basically think of rock in a
form sort of like pudding).
• This layer makes up about 2/3 of Earth's
mass.
Write in notebook:
• The Earth’s Outer Core: (orange corner)
• Liquid layer made of nickel and iron
• Spins around the inner core
• Earth’s only liquid layer
• The Outer Core is so hot that it is entirely
liquid.
• To give you an idea of how hot it is,
Nickel becomes a liquid at 2,650
degrees F and iron melts at
2,800 degrees F!
Write in notebook:
• The Earth’s Inner Core: (red corner)
• Solid iron and nickel layer
• Densest layer
• The inner core + the Earth’s rotation, creates
the Earth’s magnetic field.
• Although the temperature is higher, the nickel
and iron here are in solid form because of the
intense pressure that this layer experiences.
Now it’s time to get our hands dirty…
• You will be making your model now…
• Please follow along as we work together to
create your model
• Remember these colors
• Inner core = red
• Outer core = orange
• Mantle = yellow
• Crust = blue
