1.7B Streams, Lakes, and Oceans 1st Grade: EARTH Dates: Lesson Overview Teacher: Pre Lesson Implementation • Read the TEACHER BACKGROUND and use the key concepts to drive instruction. • Identify and gather materials needed for activities in the unit by viewing the MATERIALS LIST. • Review INTERNET RESOURCES and see how they can be integrated into the unit. I. ENGAGE A teacher led activity or demonstration that hooks the student and connects with student knowledge ¾ Students describe streams, lakes, and oceans with visual cues. Maps are then used to identify local examples of each. II. EXPLORE A hands-on activity or experiment ¾ Students create an example of a lake, stream, or ocean with clay. ¾ Students visit other models built in the class to comment on the characteristics of each. III. EXPLAIN Teacher uses questioning strategies to probe student understanding and connect concepts to real life experiences ¾ Teacher asks questions to the students on • exploring the concept through inquiry. • applying the activity to real-life connections. • investigating the concept further. ¾ Students draw pictures of specific vocabulary words by drawing on their knowledge from the Explore and Explain section. ¾ Teacher shares knowledge and understanding of concepts by discussing the PICTURE VOCABULARY. IV. ELABORATE Students expand their concept knowledge through hands-on, project-focused, and literacy-based experiences ¾ Students learn more about the concept through reading the SCIENCE READING PASSAGE. ¾ Students investigate the concept further by conducting another hands-on activity in the NEXT STEP INQUIRY ACTIVITY: How does the amount of salt in water affect how things float? ¾ Students read more on topic by looking at aligned books in the BOOKS ON TOPIC section. ¾ Teacher leads the students through further discovery using concept EXTENSIONS: Waterequipment store poster and tourist skits. ¾ Students use their knowledge of the concept to create a rubric-based project with the CONCEPT BUILDER: Lake, Stream, and Ocean Model using bottles. V. EVALUATE Teacher checks for understanding ¾ Students play the concept-focused INTERACTIVE REVIEW GAME. ¾ Teacher scores the assessment with the ITEM ANALYSIS REPORT and gives students feedback. ¾ Students demonstrate knowledge of concept by WRITING ON TOPIC based on the writing prompt and identified rubric.
