– Empowerment of the local
communities to use the Lake
resources productively and
economically;
– Provision of an enabling atmosphere
for a peaceful use of the Lakes
resources;
– Development of micro-credit facility
for purposes of enhancing the
economic level of the communities
around the Lake; .Carrying out of
research activities for purposes of
improving the state of the lake’s biodiversity;

– Development of sound policies with
a view to improving the
management of the lake’s
resources;
– Coordination of other nongovernmental organisations in their
pursuit for a balanced and
unduplicated service;
– Operation of an Institute of Lake’s
Management and Development;
– Collaboration with other players in
the region including governments in
their effort to provide adequate
services.

• Activities for 2010
– Promote alternative sustainable livelihoods activities amongst
communities living around the lakes
• in the areas of agriculture, fishery, tourism, settlement, energy and water
– Create awareness on the need for lakes conservation and sustainable
resources utilization
• through engagement of schools around lakes
– Disseminate good practices in Lakes management through catchment
conservation activities.
– Build the capacity of EALLN members and other NGOs working on lake
protection through resource mobilization, lake based research and
eco-business development
– Realize two model projects per country on sustainable wetland
resource use, environmental education, fishing, energy and sanitation
– mobilize resources for the EALLN Network

Achievements
– Profiling of lakes has been done for twenty (20)
lakes across the network and a data base is
available, the information is also available on the
global nature fund website;
www.globalnature.org
– Awareness raising on lakes issues through fliers
on the plight of different lakes across East Africa
in the five countries as an ongoing process. The
LL partner from Uganda started already a local
initiative
– Members have been trained in renewable energy
technologies and NGO management for Lake
Victoria basin through partnership with
OSIENALA
– First Annual General meeting “Save our
Tanganyika” is planned for 2010 in Burundi at
Lake Tanganyika.
