Article Abstract PPNW 2017 Assessments of lake indicators through a comparison between tropical and subtropical shallow lakes Amorim, Lais; Martins J.R.S1, Vinçon-Leite, B2.; Lemaire, B.J..3 Lake indicators such as Lake number, Schimidt Stability, Wedderburn number and others has been frequently used to evaluate and predict waterbody’s stratification behavior due to meteorological and climate conditions. Small and shallow lakes are particularly affected in terms of their water quality by onset and mixing episodes related to energy incidence and winds. High resolution measurements of water column temperature and atmospheric variables like air temperature, radiation, precipitation and wind components can be employed to characterize and predict dangerous events that affect aquatic life, water supply systems operations, recreation and others water uses. The aim of this article is to assess computed lake indicators along onset and mixing events in shallow lakes and correlate them with main atmospheric driving forces. Two lakes in two different climate regions were considered: Lake Créteil, situated in Paris surroundings, France, and Hedberg Reservoir, located 60 km from the City of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Both water bodies have same characteristics in terms of water volume, depth and surface and were monitored along the year 2016 using high resolution temperature gages and meteorological variable instruments. Lake indicators were computed for specific events using Lake Analyzer (Read et al, 2002) and the results were compared and to the literature. The assessments show the Maximum Schimidt Stability number to have the same order of magnitude for both lakes, as well as Lake number. Results taken from the tropical lake present a larger range of values, probably due to the higher number of episodes observed. 1 Hydraulic & Environmental Eng. Dept.
