The Newest Generation of LED Tube January 20, 2016 Presented by: David L. Gershaw: President of RemPhos Click the image below to watch our Founder’s video! Background on RemPhos Established in 2009 and headquartered in Danvers, Massachusetts, RemPhos Technologies has a strong presence in the LED lighting industry. The company’s first alliance was with OSRAM Sylvania and Siemens in the production of fixtures using its phosphor embedded polymers. Building off that platform, RemPhos has spent over 7 years developing and manufacturing an array of new products. From 2009 to 2012, we concentrated our efforts in serving as an external R&D and manufacturing partner for OSRAM Sylvania. This first partnership established the strong foundation from which RemPhos’ unique engineering approaches and near-perfect quality control systems were born. 3 Who is RemPhos Today?! 4 Background on RemPhos RemPhos is a unique company with VERY special people. The lighting world is filled with good companies offering great products and services, yet we stand alone in all we offer. RemPhos combines extremely innovative product design, exceedingly high quality large-scale manufacturing, lightning-fast product customization, personalized customer service, surprisingly great pricing and sufficiently huge in-stock inventory to ship your order immediately, for delivery exactly as you request. We are laserfocused on LED lighting and we literally helped write the book on energy efficiency rebate programs. RemPhos designs, manufactures, customizes, stocks and delivers for optimal energy efficiency and stake-holder delight. It’s passionately what we do…every day. Choose RemPhos and you’ll have selected the only, best partner you’ll need for lighting-energy efficiency. 5 Remember this. I will bring this up later. 6 Definitions Terminology used when discussing LED tubes UL Type A • Fluorescent ballast compatible UL Type B • Line or main voltage (120-277V AC) operation UL Type C • External driver UL Type D • The future! You will learn more later Tube Socket Styles • Shunted vs. Non-shunted 7 The History of LED Tubes In the eyes of RemPhos Currently there are 3 different types of LED tubes on the market. They are mainly differentiated by how they interact with existing ballasts. The reason why the issue of ballast vs. no ballasts exists at all is because the fluorescent tube needs a ballast to operate and LEDs…do not! Fluorescent tubes require a high voltage burst of energy to jump-start and then something to regulate the voltage during normal operation. LEDs do not need a ballast. They have no use for the high voltage surge or the manner in which the fluorescent ballast regulates the voltage. Actually, LEDs require zero surge and current regulation. In an effort to make LEDs fit into fixtures originally designed for fluorescent tubes, manufactures have (up till today …) come up with 3 different styles of LED tube. • • • • Type A (works with FL ballast) Type B (works with main or line voltage, bypassing the fluorescent ballast) Type C (external driver) The D Type (this is where things start to get exciting!) 8 The History of LED Tubes In the eyes of RemPhos 9 *this only covers non-external driver tubes The History of LED Tubes Type A (works with FL ballast) HOW IT WORKS: Type A LED tubes have internal circuitry which makes it possible for them to work off of existing fluorescent (FL) ballasts. Plug & Play. PROS: Fast and easy installation. CONS: Shorter lifespan. Simpler circuitry inside the LED driver which does not provide a clean, consistent flow of power to the LEDs. Lifespan of system (tube + FL ballast) dependent on the age of the FL ballast. Not compatible with all ballasts. Not as efficient (some power is lost in the FL ballast and the circuitry in the LED tube). The potential hazard of Type-A Tube Due to the wide variety of FL ballasts that these tubes need to be compatible with, voltage can rise to as much as 900V. This high voltage can result in stress on electrical components and the risk of excessive heat. Most have no protection. 10 The History of LED Tubes Type B (works with line voltage) HOW IT WORKS: Type B LED tubes require the existing FL ballast to be removed from the fixture and the sockets rewired to 120-277V AC. PROS: No wattage loss from the FL ballast. Less long term maintenance costs due to eliminating the FL ballast. CONS: Electrical modifications must be made to the fixture including removing the FL ballast and often replacing shunted sockets (found on the common FL instant start ballasts) with non-shunted sockets. Installation can be dangerous with double sided power to sockets. Maintenance safety issue in the future if sockets are wired to single sided power and a FL tube is accidentally installed. What happens when an FL tube is inserted into a non-shunted socket, wired to line voltage (120-277V AC)? FL tube is inserted Electrode illuminates Electrode breaks (like fuse) FL lamp is disabled11 The Newest Generation of LED Tube…Type D Engineered, designed and manufactured by: 13 The Future of LED Tubes Type D (works safely with or without FL ballast) HOW IT WORKS: The RemPhos Type D TOTALtUBE® G2 LED tube is a combination of Type A + Type B. It will operate safely and efficiently with the existing FL ballast or safely and efficiently bypassing the FL ballast and wiring the sockets to 120-277V AC. PROS: Takes advantage of the easy and fast installation of Type A and the increased efficiency and maintenance savings of Type B. Safe for the fixture and the installer. Safe if FL tube is inserted later. CONS: None. UL TYPE A FL Ballast Compatible Ballast Compatible Mode Do not need to change ballast or rewire fixture Plug & Play UL TYPE B 120-277V AC Direct Ballast Bypass Mode Do not need to replace or maintain the old ballast. If old ballast does burn out, user can wire the existing sockets to line voltage, quickly and easily (due to double sided, shunted or non-shunted socket compatibility) 14 The Future of LED Tubes RemPhos TOTALtUBE® G2 15 RemPhos TOTALtUBE® G2 Unique Key Features SMARTSENSE-TLED® Switch • An amazing development in intelligent electrical & mechanical safety SMARTSENSE® Thermal Protection • Keeps the LED tube and the fixture safe REM-POLYMER ® Plastic Tube Body • Tube is constructed out of high strength and thermally conductive advanced plastics REM-STRONG ® Assembly Process • Robust, consistent and proven design and assembly 7 YEAR Warranty • Industry leading due to highest quality component selection 16 SMARTSENSE-TLED® Switch • An amazing development in intelligent electrical & mechanical safety Inspiration for this concept came while I was driving the RemPhos all-electric BMW i3. I said to myself: why can’t there be a “START/STOP” switch for an LED tube which would prevent any safety risks?! = START/STOP for LED! 17 SMARTSENSE-TLED® Switch • An amazing development in intelligent electrical & mechanical safety • • • • Unique and patent-pending design Prevents electricity from flowing from one end to the other end of the tube Utilizes shunted or non-shunted sockets (which saves new socket $ and labor) Prevents gap between tube and socket (which can lead to arcing) 18 SMARTSENSE-TLED® Switch • An amazing development in intelligent electrical & mechanical safety Insert one-side of the tube into the fixture, touch the pins on the other side without any concern Insert the other side of the tube into the fixture, however tube is still not powered on. The tube is only powered on when pressing the final 2 switches on both sides press the switch! UL1993- Relamping: SA8.19.2 One end (lamp base) of the device under test shall be connected to its intended source of supply while the other end (lamp base) of the device shall be considered accessible and shall be connected to the shock hazard measurement meter circuit and, in turn. The current shall not exceed 5 M.I.U (7.07 peak M.I.U.). 19 Be careful with other’s products… Some Type D tubes are available with switches on the end cap only. This design can be dangerous since the tube is electrified as soon as it is inserted even if the pins are making more contact with the sockets. Large gap causes arcing 20 SMARTSENSE® Thermal Protection • Keeps the LED tube and the fixture safe Built in Over-Temperature Protection RemPhos TOTALtUBE G2® Circuit Design 3 integrated TEMPSENSE® temperature sensing fuses This unique design protects the LED tube if it is installed incorrectly or with a non compatible ballast or if arcing between the tube pins and sockets exists Others poor design No fuses End cap, tube body, socket or fixture can become damaged 21 REM-POLYMER ® Plastic Tube Body • Tube is constructed out of high strength and thermally conductive advanced plastics Utilizing RemPhos’ background in materials science, we have developed a polymer processing technique which combines beautifully uniform illumination and proper heat dissipation for the optimum LED and electronics performance. Results: Less manufacturing defects 23 7 YEAR Warranty • Industry leading due to highest quality component selection By using only the highest quality components for both the structure and the electronics, RemPhos is able to offer an industry first 7 year warranty with or without ballast (see warranty document for full details). Results: Peace of mind and less maintenance24 Fixture Safety Any UL concerns with fixture or sockets? SOCKETS: Various white papers have been written and UL has issued statements regarding this topic. FL lamp holders are designed to handle up to 600V. Therefore they are safe with LED use. FIXTURE: The fixture body, lens and other components remain unaffected by the retrofit. The LED tube is covered under RemPhos’ warranty. The FL ballast is still covered under the FL ballast manufacturer’s warranty. 25 Other Considerations Emergency Battery Backup (EM) RUNNING OFF OF FL BALLAST: Use with an off-the-shelf FL emergency battery backup. Check compatibility first: RUNNING OFF OF LINE VOLTAGE: 2 Options: 1)Use with an off-the-shelf EM inverter such as: -Philips Bodine ELI-S20 Inverter -Larger IOTA units 2)Use with an auxiliary LED board EM kit such as the RemPhos Fulham Hotspot Kits: -500LM unit (RPT-ACCESSORY-EMGKIT-HS1-500LM) -1000LM unit (RPT-ACCESSORY-EMGKIT-HS1-1000LM) 26 Other Considerations Dimming Compatibility So what are our options if we want dimming? RUNNING OFF OF FL BALLAST: We not recommend attempting to use our TOTALtUBE G2® with a dimming FL ballast. Some dimming ballasts have proven to be compatible, but generally speaking, dimming will be poor. RUNNING OFF OF LINE VOLTAGE: There is no way to dim the TOTALtUBE G2® on line voltage. OPTION 1 Type C (external driver) LED tube. A kit which includes the tube and a driver. The driver will have 0-10V dimming. OPTION 2 (Coming soon…) RemPhos has developed a new style of Type B (line voltage) tube which will dim using a standard on/off wall switch. When the light switch is turned on, the tube illuminates and starts at its dim level and gradually increases in brightness until it reaches full intensity. To set the brightness to a certain level, toggle the switch off and then back on. The tube has memory to save the position.
