Abigail’s Team Building Activities
1. The 1st team building activity I chose was an exercise called “life highlights” The
game begins with group members closing their eyes for one minute and trying to
consider the best moments of their lives. This can include moments they’ve had
alone, they’ve shared with family or friends; these moments can pertain to
professional successes, personal revelations, or exciting life adventures. After the
group members have had a moment to run through highlights of their lives, we
make it more interesting by narrowing down the choices. While keeping their
eyes closed, each participant is asked to take a moment to decide what 30 seconds
of their life they would want to relive if they only had thirty seconds left in their
life. The second portion of the game is the “review” section. The leader of the
activity will ask each and every participant what their 30 seconds entailed and
why they chose it, which will allow participants to get a feel for each other’s
loves, and personalities. I chose this activity because I feel like the first part of the
activity enables group members to reflect back on their lives, while the second
part enables them to get to know other group members on a more intimate level.
2. The second activity called an “autobiography poem” also encourages group
members to get to know one another on a more personal level. Each member is to
answer a series of questions that will eventually be made into a poem. The poem
format is as follows:
1. The first line is their first name,
2. The second line is three words that describe themselves,
3. The third line is three things they like
4. The fourth line is three things they do not like
5. The fifth line is three movies they have seen (could do books they have
read, but movies usually get a better response),
6. The sixth line is a thing they are looking forward to…,
7. The seventh line is three things they like about college,
8. The eighth line is two goals they have,
9. The nine line is a place they would like to visit, and
10. The tenth line is their last name.
3. My personal favorite is a game called World Geography. This game really
challenges people to think. The way it works is you say the name of a country,
and then the next person has to say another country, starting with the last letter
from the previous one. This is a game that can help people loosen up because
most people do not know all 196 countries and that can be a commonality
amongst group members and those who know more can help others.
