Second Grade Science Assessments page 1 of 6 Needs, Life Cycle, and Heredity of Plants (Life Science) Academic Standard: TLW identify the needs of plants, describe the life cycle of flowering plants, and identify characteristics of plants that are passed from parents to young. A. TLW order stages of the plant’s life cycle. Directions: Use the chart below and the illustrations on the following page to either draw or cut and paste the life cycle stages of a plant in the correct order. Write the appropriate name from the Word Bank beside each picture. (Or use pictures from AIMS, Primarily Plants, Sunflowers, page 147 in the 2005 edition.) TLW draw a plant with its six parts drawn and labeled. Directions: Draw and label the six parts of a plant. TLW will determine what will happen to a plant if one of its basic needs is taken away. Directions: Read the story below and write in the answer from the Word Bank. Benny Botanist needed a vacation. He decided to leave the responsibility of caring for his plants to his neighbor Freddy Forgetter. Benny told her that his plants need light, water and air. Freddy forgot! When Benny returned home from his trip, he couldn’t believe it! All of his prizewinning plants were horribly sick. Use what you learned in your scientific investigation to help Benny figure out what Freddy forgot to give each plant. Use the clues in the box. Give the plant: • light • water • fresh air • light and water Plant #1 had droopy leaves, cracked soil and little growth. The plant needs: Plant #2 had moist soil, pale leaves and little growth. The plant needs: Plant #3 had pale leaves, cracked soil and no growth. The plant needs: Freddy did remember to give all the plants: Criteria: Accurate responses (may read to student and have them answer questions verbally) Proficiency: 3 out of 4 KC 4 Science © 2009 Kent ISD Second Grade Science Assessments page 5 of 6 Needs, Life Cycle, and Heredity of Plants (Answer Key) seeds seedling adult plant with fruit Life Cycle of a Plant adult plant with flowers KC 4 Science adult plant © 2009 Kent ISD Second Grade Science Assessments page 6 of 6 Needs, Life Cycle, and Heredity of Plants (Answer Key continued) B.
