Forms of Energy
Energy
• Energy- The ability to do work
• Work- A transfer of energy
• Work and energy are measured in joules
• Joules- SI unit of work and energy equal
to 1 Newton per meter
• Newton- SI unit of force
Potential Vs Kinetic Energy
• Potential Energy- Energy that is stored as
a result of position or shape
• The higher up an object is, the greater
potential energy.
• Kinetic Energy- The energy of motion
• The greater the speed and mass of the
object the greater the kinetic energy
Types of Potential Energy
• Gravitational Potential Energy-Potential
energy that depends upon an object’s
height
• Elastic Potential Energy- The potential
energy of an object that is stretched or
compressed.
Major Forms of Energy
Thermal Energy- (Heat Energy) Total kinetic energy
contained in all the particles of a substance.
Mechanical Energy- Energy an object has because of
its motion or position.
Chemical Energy- The energy stored in chemical
bonds.
Electrical Energy- The energy associated with electrical
charges.
Light Energy- The energy carried by light and other
forms of electromagnetic waves
Sound Energy- The energy carried by sound waves
Nuclear Energy- The energy stored in atomic nuclei
