Research Interests I am interested in probing the electromagnetic and the spin structure of the nucleon utilizing variety of hadronic and leptonic probes. My thesis experiment established a discrepancy between the Rosenbluth separations and polarization transfer results on the proton form factor ratio μpGEp/GMp, and I am interested in the resolution of this discrepancy. I am also interested in understanding the impact of the two-photon exchange and Coulomb distortion corrections on high-precision electron and neutrino scattering measurements. Such corrections can potentially resolve the discrepancy between the Rosenbluth separations and polarization transfer results. Related topics of research interest include proton and neutron form factors and spin structure functions. Although current data indicate that quark spins contribute significantly to the nucleon spin, the origin of the remaining fraction of the spin is not yet understood and is still an intriguing research problem. I took a leading rule in carrying out the analysis of the 2006 run of transversely polarized p-p data collected with the STAR detector at BNL. Such measurements provide direct sensitivity to possible correlation, Sivers effect, between the transverse momentum direction of partons in the initial state and the transverse spin orientation of the parent proton. The Sivers effect rises from the orbital angular momentum contribution to spin of the proton. Thus, the gluon helicity distribution and the orbital angular momenta are essential to the understanding of the proton spin. Other measurements on the nucleon allow us to probe not just the nucleon structure, but learn more about the Standard Model. Quark-Hadron duality probes the transition between quark and hadronic degrees of freedom, which is related to the QCD properties of confinement and asymptotic freedom. Measurements of the neutron, electron, and deuteron electric dipole moment provide an opportunity to look for physics beyond the Standard Model. ISSAM A.
