Assignment 3: The Importance of Development,
Communication and Learning in Teams
Introduction
Team work is intensively important to any business line, the team importantly needs a
leader who have the ability to analyze his team and find the requirement to develop the team
by finding the weak points in each individual and overall the team. So, team who keep using
the same parties and the same knowledge without any development will have a daily routine
which at a point of time will start to carve down from the perspective of initiative. For
example if we have a particular exhibition and every event will have the same arrangement
and preparation without any development and from the visitors view it will become boring
and will take bad reputation even if the event is different. This report will contain some
subjects which are the importance of team development, effective training principles, stages
in team development, communication in teams, and team learning. .(Jerome, 2005)
Importance of Team Development
Effective leader who concerns about productivity, team successful and efficiency, also,
leaders who have the confidence of their potential is always do the training and development
of his team, as a part of development, initiative leader give each member the chance to
implement his innovations into the work, which at the end will make a group of innovations
which somehow will develop the team members and work outcomes. In addition, selfdevelopment and third party developments training
should be non-stop because the creativity doesn’t have borders. In the antithesis , leader
who afraid of losing his position by one of his developed members will scarce the
development of his team members to avoid replacing him by one of his members, which will
affect the productivity and initiatives. For example, a team leader afraid of losing his
position, didn’t developed his team members and encapsulated in limited procedure for a
couple of years without any development neither to his team members or work environment,
this leader will notice that he is falling to the worst period compared to the period when he
started leading this team. (Kotler, 2007).
Effective Training Principles
Selecting the proper training and development related to the work or to the tasks of a team
member will affect the overall team performance and productivity, studying and updating
knowledge for the served party will also considered as a type of development. For example, in
term of customers of a retail market, training and developing a marketer and studying the
customer requirements and knowing the efficiency from the point of customer view will enable
the team member to market for his products and how to convince the customer about any of the
products, thus successes will be observed.(McCarthy, 2005)
Stages in Team Development
Forming: building the team, each member well knows his tasks and responsibilities, well
know in which point his tasks interact with his colleague tasks. For example, in retail market,
cashier and marketer should know their tasks and each of them should do what is required
from him, in a point where the marketer will reach a stage that the customer will interact with
the cashier, here the cashier should know the marketer techniques to have the same concepts
from the customer point of view.
Storming: where the ideas and innovations between two or more team members may
conflict, or may give the same result but with two different ways and implementing one of
those ideas will affect the confidence of the other team member. For example, two team
members, each one give an idea in how to prepare a report to the management but in different
formats, here, the group leader should try either to implement both reports and blend them
together to get new report idea made of both members ideas, or selecting one of the formats
in a professional way where the other member will not get disappointed.
Norming: each team member should know the goal of team formation. For example, a
team member works as an individual and not forming a team work with others will make a
gap between the team members and his outcomes which at the end will affect the goal of the
team.
Performing: team members reached a stage where they can take decisions on the tasks
without going back to the leader, which means they can function as a unit. For Example,
team of training center, can reach a point that they know all the stages of giving a training to
trainees and faced a lot of issues and resolved them, then in this stage the trainer will not
need to go back to the leader to consult him in certain issue and he can resolve it instantly.
Adjourning: when the team reach a point where the team fails to reach the goals or reach
a point that the team is no more needed. For example, a team in an organization tracks the
products and calculates the profits and marketing, and in a certain stage the computer and
system becomes the calculator of all of these automatically, and then the team becomes nonproductive because their main purpose is done automatically. . (Kotler, 2007)
Communication in Teams
Communication is the main success key of team work, exchanging the functions and
performance between team members will make the team more effective and well-tuned. For
example, a team leader who make a meetings in regular basis to exchange the problems,
obstructions and successes will notice that his team is improving, problems doesn’t occurs again,
obstructions are surpassed, and successes are benefited.(McCarthy, 2005)
Team Learning
Team leader, who well knows the team formation and the purpose of his team, can study
and consult for the best and proper developments and training for his team to significantly
achieve team goals in a professional way. once he knows these things then he can
professionally and clearly assign tasks to team members, thus whenever a team member
developed or trained then he can concentrate and get more benefits from those development
programs. For example: a team member of customer service team, this member is working as
a customer calls receiver and this member trained and developed to well communicate with
customers and to serve them in shorter and more efficient way, then this member is
professionally developed. . (Kotler, 2007)
Conclusion
In conclusion, team work very important to build well business. This assignment
highlights the main points that develop the team which are: first, the importance of team
development. Then, the effective training principles. Also, five stages in team development
which are forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Furthermore,
communication in teams. Finally, team learning.
