Critique Guidelines : Technical Theatre
It should be formatted so that it is double spaced, written in 12pt Times New Roman font and in
paragraph form.
The different parts of the Critique
Introduction - should be at least one paragraph or longer and include:
 The name of the show
 Where you saw it
 When you saw it
 What type of theatre was this play held in (proscenium, thrust, arena)
Set / Props - should be at least one paragraph or longer and include:
 What did the set look like
 Was the set stylized or realistic
 What materials was it made out of
 What colors were used
 What were some memorable props used in the show
 Were the props realistic or stylized
Lights - should be at least one paragraph or longer and include:
 Where did the light come from
 Was the lighting stylized or realistic
 What colors of light did you see
 Were there any lighting “special effects” used
 Did the lighting used support the emotions of the play
Sound - should be at least one paragraph or longer and include:
 What types of sounds did you hear
 Were the sounds live or prerecorded
 Were the sounds used stylized or realistic
 Did the sounds used support the emotions of the play
 Were there and sound effects, what effects
Costume / Make-up - should be at least one paragraph or longer and include:
 What colors were used in the costumes
 Could you tell who someone was (poor, rich, royalty, peasant) from their costume
 Were the costumes stylized or realistic
 Could you tell if the people were wearing make-up
 Was the make-up stylized or realistic
Conclusion - should be at least one paragraph or longer and include:
 Did you enjoy the show
 Do you think the artistic team accomplished what they wanted to
 Would you recommend this play to a friend, why or why not
