Syndicate Discussion Method
Syndicate method is a participative method
which basically consists of dividing up the
participants into number of groups for the
purpose of discussion, in exercise, or work
on a project.
Purpose
• To undertake a practical exercise or a
project.
• To split a large group into more
manageable form etc.
Process of syndicate discussion
• Decide the appropriateness of the method
• Prepare specific
subject/question/issues/exercise for
discussion
• Prepare key learning points related to the
issues

• Subject/issues need to be informed to all
the participants. Ensure that each an every
members fully understands it
• Formation of group and chairperson
selection
• Observation during the discussion and
stimulate each an every members for active
participation

• Collection of the reports after completion of
the time
• Report presentation
• Discussion/question on every report
• Conclusion of the reports should be linked
up with the subject matter through
generating learning point.

• Decide the time/point at which it can be
introduced to the best advantage.
• Ensure that the reporting back period
allows adequate time for the presentation
and discussion of all the reports

• Use this technique with discretion and after
careful preparation and adequate briefing.
• Do not set impossible task. Take account of
the group's experience and capacity when
framing the remit.
Advantages
• Encourage frank discussion
(especially if no instructor present).
• Gives practice in chairmanship and
presentation of report or findings
(generally).
