• attachment style Based on Bowlby's attachment theory, which describes the dynamics of long-term relationships between
humans; there are four main styles of attachment—secure, anxious-preoccupied, anxious-avoidant, and fearful-avoidant.
• bilateral Involving both sides equally; often refers to involving both sides of the brain.
• bipolar disorder A psychiatric diagnostic category, previously called manic depression, characterized by mood swings between
great energy (mania) and clinical depression.
• classical conditioning The use of a neutral stimulus, originally paired with one that invokes a response, to generate a
conditioned response.
